I may be visiting Ireland in the summer, but I've never travelled internationally...Help? |
1) What are the customs in Ireland? I'm going to stay with some distant relatives near Cork.
2) Is English the predominant language, or should I study the local terminology?
3) Are there any specifics I should know/learn, such as etiquette, ways of dressing, or lifestyle differences? I've only lived in the U.S.
Thanks so much in advance for your help! |

Ireland is a modern European country, I think you'll be surprised
Cork is great, but good luck understanding them, tell them a 'jackeen' said that, they'll know what you mean. I don't understand their local terminology, and I'm Irish, so you don't even try to!!
We speak English (Hibernian English is the trendy term for it now).
As for what you should know and learn, the best advice I can give you is not to believe everything your told, our sense of humour does not really work beyond these shores, so just laugh along and enjoy yourself. And we dress more or less the same, just make sure you have a hat (for the rain)
Get your friends to take you to West Cork, its beautiful there. |

You'll find things in general are the same, but the small differences are always the wierdest ones - my friends from the US have commented on things like the way most bathrooms have seperate hot & cold faucets, how hard it is to get used to right-hand drive cars & small differences in language (boot for truck, petrol for gas, footpath for sidewalk etc). You won't have any trouble understanding our English once you get used to the accent (think the difference in accent between deep South USA & someplace like Maine). Clothing is pretty much the same, there are some small differences in etiquette but take the lead of your relatives & you'll be fine. Don't make out you know everything about the world or Ireland & be ready to listen, learn & share & you'll be fine. |

Pack yer bag yer sorted. There's no difference.Just don't wear tartan trousers.
Seriously though, there's no difference whatsoever. They do have a wicked sense of humour though those Corkonians. |

Um mostly the same as anywhere in the 1st world, most of us speak an Irish dialect of English and some like me speak Irish as much as I can, one thing you should know: English is the first language of most of us but is not and never will be our mother language and it is extremely insulting to have it called that, apart from that you'll pick it up quick enough |

Just pack your bags and have fun. You will find Ireland to be a very outgoing place to be the people are wonderful and open to other cultures. Don't be afraid to ask people to repeat themselves especially in Cork as the accent is quiter strong, some of them may poke fun at you but for the most part will not be offended by the yank with waxy ears. As far as dress, the same as the U.S. an I believe you'll be surprised at how culturaly diverse the place has become as far as lifestyle and cuisine. Go O'bama |

They speak English but many may also speak Gaelic.
I suggest you google Irish newspapers and select one near where you will be staying, and glance at it from day to day to see what type of stuff is going on.
Many lifestyle differences. |
