Why When How

there are 2 types of UK stamps, those without the value on it and those with. you are sending a letter to a FOREIGN country so you need stamps with the value on it and that value needs to cobver the cost of sending it to Dublin.

if you send it just by first class for example the receiver may have to pay the short comming in price.

Now if you are using an SAE you ought to use Irish stamps. Irish stamps are not valid in UK and UK stamps are not valid in Ireland.

you can get special coupons but they are a bit of a pain in the neck to sort.

Britain and Ireland are part of the Universal Postal Union which means you can purchase an international reply coupon at your post office to include with your addressed envelope. This can then be redeemed in Ireland for the value of the postage. you can read more about the UPU at the site below:

You may need an International Response Coupon which you buy at a Post Office.
It's what I enclose when I need a reply from European Countries and since Dublin uses euros not sterling it's possible our stamps wouldn't be accepted.
Interesting question - I'll watch for other replies.
