It's nothing to be ashamed of. Sit down with your parents and tell them straight. We're sure their reaction won't be as bad as you think. Tell your close friends as well. If they care for you they'll understand.

Have you tried asking your parents?

O'Collins is O'Cuilleain or O'Coilean in Irish (two different families). It's a very old last name, and yes the name originated in Ireland.
Check this out for a little history on your last name;
http://www.ucadia.com/frank/frank_name.htm

clan simply means family-but more specifically 'children', and is derived from the Irish (gaeilge) word "clann" which does indeed mean children.
For example;
"An bhfuil clann agat?" (do you have any chilren)
"Tá clann agam." (I have chilren)

However; just because you have a last name which is Irish does not necessarily mean you are Irish! It simply means you have irish ancestors.

Are you from ireland - no? Then you're not irish. simple as, just cos your uncle's cousin's sister's boyfriend's cat farted and it smelt like guiness doesn't make you irish - sorry! We're a rare breed and we certaintly wouldn't entertain questions like this!!!

O'Collins as said already is an Old Irish name but it's not just a Regal surname it is also a very popular name amongst the traveller community of Ireland -

look up

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Traveller

The O from O collins has been largely dropped in Ireland, so the name Collins would be a huge one, also look up Micheal Collins - an Irish hero to many.
