Is northern Ireland different country to republic of Ireland?
if you like you can say ...

I was in Northern Ireland recently and on more than one occasion I was called a 'Free-stater'.?

It's a tad odd as I'm English but it seems the 'D' on my car gave me away. Does anyone else have a problem with this term..I get the feeling it was not an endearing term..

I should be doing something else
I have heard this term before athough never used it myself.

I don't think that it is meant in any derogatory fashion at all.
Free Stater would refer to someone from the 'Free State' (a term sometimes used in Northern Ireland for the Republic of Ireland)

Free State because it is a Republic, an independent country.

I live on the border, i'm in Derry mostly everyday.

it happens a lot, you just have to let it roll off you like water off a ducks back.

I never heard that before? whats a free stater? anyway i think it sounds nice :)

Meathgirl!
I would have a problem with that, I'm Irish and its seems that it is not meant to b an endearing term.

In saying that I've been to the north a few times and never had any comments like that.

Wow, this must be a recent thing, because when I had to go to NI on business in 2006 nobody said that to me.

Guess the notion of 'free' must get to some of them.

WeenerMan
Yes, the D registration can be a give away, what part of Northern Ireland did this happen in? The next time someone says that, reply with, what's that first word again, I'm sorry I didn't quite get it, oh yeah... free.
