I would like to travel to Ireland.? |
I am from America, Michigan to be exact. I am 3rd generation Irish-American. My family comes from Dublin, and for my 18th birthday, my mom would like to take me to see the homeland. I'm just curious as an American about two things. First thing, what is some things i should do in Ireland that i would not experience anywhere else? Secondly, how are Americans treated in Ireland? (And should i mention, I do have the stereotypical red hair, pale skin, and freckles, but i dress like a regular american teenager) Thank you for your help. |

Not as many redheads in Ireland as the PR would have you believe, although the gene is in almost every family. And once you get it, you can't get rid of it.
You'll be 18, so you can legally drink alcohol in Ireland. Try cider, and drink in moderation - hangovers are awful. Take in some history, and also try and see some of the ancient prehistoric sites - you don't have those in the US, or if you do, you're keeping them a secret.
Dublin is the capital of Ireland, but even Dubliners have admitted that it doesn't have the same feel as the rest of the country and is not representative of Ireland. Head out of the Dublin and to the west, north or south for the real Ireland.
In Ireland, Americans are usually tourists, and so are treated as such.

agree with first person that you should also try to see outside of dublin..i recommened Killarney in the west of ireland. Lots of beautiful scenery around, and theres also lots of restaurants, hotels and pubs in the town.
things to do would be drink guiness. In dublin you should visit the guiness brewery which is where they make it...they give you a free pint, and u get a good view of dublin at the top. You could also go see the Book of Kells in Trinity college , again in dublin - its a really old manuscript, very famous. Kilmainhaim jail for a bit of history.
other places outside but not too far from dublin are newgrange and glendalough..both worth a trip
and americans are treated just fine, have fun :)
have a look at http://www.discoverireland.com/

A visit to Ireland is never complete until you visit Galway, it's in the west coast of Ireland. There are many touristy things to do around the county but the city is great and so is the Guinness.
Americans are treated well, as long as they are respect full (especially in regards to GAA).
All in all Ireland's great :) |

Well welcome home as far as I'm concerned, I'm from Dublin too :) Just google discoverIreland and there's loads of suggestions for stuff. Something you should know: although most of us speak English first we speak a very different English to American and English people, you might want to buy a book on Irish slang. Apart from that keep the volume down (Americans are really loud by our standards) and don't make generalized statements about us eg :Whilst I am a nationalist I don't want an English holocaust, that sorta stuff. Hope you enjoy your holiday! |

I love the way americans are so acutely aware of how irish they are!
The best thing about dublin city, i feel is the "craic". Its what keeps us happy despite the lack of good weather! For this reason you should get yourself to an irish stand up comedy gig somewhere in the city centre. Were a big fan of americans we cant believe our luck when you crack out that silly accent (no offence)... no you'll be very popular, without a doubt!! You will definitely be asked 101 questions about barack obama - so come prepared! |
