If I moved back to Ireland would it be possible to get my accent again? |
Hi I was born in America but when I was 5 I moved back to Ireland because my dad is from there and my mom's parents are from there. My paretns were planning on just staying there for ever since all my parents' family lives over there and it's a better place to grow up than Los Angeles, etc. . So anyway I lived there for about 3 years but then because of family trouble we moved back to America when I was 8. I have always "regretted" this and I'm 17 now and ever since we left I have always wanted to move back. Now it's time to apply to college and I'm applying to a few Irish schools.
So I was wondering if it is possible for a 17 year old to get an Irish accent if my dad has an accent and I used to have an accent? How easy would it be to get it back? Is it even possible? Thanks.
Oh by the way, don't call me a plastic paddy or anything because I'm not. I hacve citizenship to both countries by the way. |

I should be doing something else

Well the accent will have always been there at the back of your mind because you have family from here and you are used to hearing the accent on a daily basis, so it is highly likely that you will pick the accent up again very quickly. |

It all depends on how good your "ear" is. You may lapse back into the accent without really realizing you are doing so just by speaking to people with the accent, but then again you may never pick it up again...
Wait and see. |

It'll come back a little bit, but you'll never sound Irish to people that have lived there for their entire lives.
My situation is very similar to yours except I moved to America at a young age and return for the summers. They can always tell I'm American. |

You'll probably get a bit of a twang, but I don't think you'll get the full whack. |

I expect you will get it back, but perhaps not 100%.
I was born in England, but grew up in Canada. However, on trips back to the UK, an accent comes out of seemingly nowhere! I cannot even imitate an English accent normally, but after a week of being there, it starts coming in, and by 2 weeks, it is quite noticeable. |
