If you have an Irish parent or grandparent you may be entitled to apply for an Irish passport. If you have a parent who is/was a citizen of an EU member state, it might be worth investigating if you can claim citizenship and/or a passport.

If you could obtain a passport for an EU member state you would be able to move freely through the EU & settle where you wish, you could still hold onto your American passport and use it to enter & exit the US.

If you can't lay claim to a passport/citizenship of an EU member state then the other option is to apply for a visa to work & live in Ireland, you need to contact the Irish Embassy in the US to get an application form and discuss the different types of visas.

I looked into doing that too. What I found out is it's next to impossible to do. To work in Ireland, you must have an employer willing to vouch for you by saying they could not find a native born Irish person to do the job they're hiring you to do. Unless you have a very specialized skillset, this won't happen. And you must have this job lined up before immigrating to Ireland. And there is a long list of jobs that are ineligible for work permits altogether. The rules on work permits have gotten even tougher due to a high unemployment rate. I wish it were easier to do. I'd be there already.

Just a few sites with relevant info:

well, let see, i supouse you have american nacionality, so you can go to ireland to live easily. If you want to go forever you have to do yourself with an irish nacinality and after that you have to obtain the necesary document. But if you only want to go for work some time only you can ask for a document that justified you are in ireland for work reasons, but is not very dificult it both cases. First must go to the council and ask there what you have to do.
