I'd say definitely, but a more importantly I think same-sex couples should have the right to adopt.
There are millions of children in this world (1000s in Ireland) who have no families, surely same-sex couples are in an ideal position to offer family life to these children.
The family is at the core of the Irish constitution, as it should be but there is not (and there never has been) only one legitimate 'type' of family. In this regard the Irish constitution has some catching up to do. |

I'd definitely be for it - as long as two people love each other and want to show this commitment to their nearest and dearest then let them do it. They're both consenting adults and there's nothing nicer then two people in love! |

Some interesting answers already, As a gay person myself Im obviously in favour of gay marriage.
Last year, The Government said that they didn't feel the Irish people were ready for a referendum on this, however newspaper poll after newspaper poll has shown that the majority of Irish people are for it. There will definitely be some sort of civil union introduced in the next two years I'd say, There have already been steps towards this.
Even though you didn't ask about gay adoption since other posters have commented on it, I'll give my two cents worth :-). I do understand that this a more divisive topic than gay marriage, but firstly to say that children NEED two parents is simply untrue of course its deemed as better or more desirable for a child to have two parents, but what about the one parent families all over the country doing a great job at bringing up their children, anyway I digress, Imo a child benefits from having two LOVING parents, their sex is immaterial. I do agree with another poster who said that the children may be teased by others, but I don't accept that as an excuse, surely that's because the negative opinions of gay parents and being gay in general immerse themselves throughout society, even as far as school children, so If the negative aspect was taken away, by societies acceptance then this wouldn't happen. There was a lesbian couple on The Late Late show a while back and their two grown up sons whom they reared together were interviewed, They were two perfectly ordinary well rounded individuals and said they would not have changed their upbringing for anything.
Anyway everyones entitled to their opinion and thats just mine. |

I would vote yes, I don't think gender should be a barrier to love and commitment. Goodness knows we could do with more love in the world. |

I'm not gay so it wouldn't apply to me, but for those who want it, why not? Two people who want to want to make a lifetime commitment - isn't that option open to the rest of us? And should be to the gay community as well. The Constitution states that all people are equal. That should apply in every situation. |

i don't agree on gay marrages, as that they should be man and woman... but i believe also more strongly that any person should be able to express them selves what ever way they want... |

Hell yeah you know I'm for it, like most of the other users.
Explanation? Nothing wrong with it, plain and simple.
Oh and you should note that a few of the people who've said yes to this are over forty |

I would say yes because everyone is entitled to have their life as they want gay or straight its nice to have that commitment to your partner |

Yes, obviously.
It doesn't effect ANYONE. Love is love.
People need to stop being so narrow minded and mind their own business. Why does it matter to people who other people marry?
Makes no sense to say no.
Yes all the way. =) |

I'd be 110% in favour of it. It's only fair.
Although, to be honest I don't know if it'd pass. The folks on Y!A seem (for the most part) to be pretty liberal, but there are still tons of prejudiced idiots up and down the country who use Catholicism as an excuse to be bigoted when they don't follow the religion at all. (Ugh... Sorry about the rant.) |

I'd vote for it.Why not? It's a pledge of commitment that two consenting adults who love each other should be allowed to take regardless of gender. No reason why they shouldn't be allowed. |

Although some of the 'narrow minded answers' are reflecting on the married union being a man and a women, let us all reflect this was due to the Irish Constitution of 1937......1937??.....should I say anymore. Times are a changing guys! I would be in full support for it. Just as I was for Divorce. Some marriages of previous times were due to what the local farmer had to offer their daughter, or how 'good' a wife she could be, familiarity breeding content, when in actual fact, some of these (minority I acknowledge) were loveless marriages. Divorce was their way of freedom. With Irish laws, unless your divorced, your spouse is still entitled to his/her share unless proper legal provisions are in place. Gay men/women, have just as much rights as the rest of us, and why take that away from them?! Because their gay? And totally agree with soul jacker, they should be allowed to adopt too. God knows there's enough young one's spitting kids out to up their benefits, let a child have a good life with a gay couple. The constitution has to be changed in order for gay couples to have their marriage legalised, and recognised, but either way, I'm all for it. |
|

I should be doing something else

I would say yes.
Gay people should have the exact same rights as people of any other sexuality, to think otherwise is absolutely ridiculous. |

I'd say, well, it's a shame I'm not Irish, and therefore can't vote yes on this one. |

It would not be my thing, but if two other people love each other enough for marriage I don't see why not. |

I would vote no, the sheer definition of Marraige is a union between a man and a woman, and besides after that they will want to adopt, and whatever way you look at it , that kid is going to be picked on later in life by stupid children with comments like " hahaha you have 2 dads".
A kid needs a mother and a father |

I would vote no. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. |

id say yes, why not? they not hurting me and its none of my business let every1 be happy.
edit i wasnt gonna say this but seen as other people have, im not in favour of gay couples adopting. whatever people say about gay relationships being natural (im sure it is natural otherwise there wouldnt be so many gay people in the world) no one can say its natural for a child to be raised in a gay relationship. i just think a child needs two parents of differing sex, thats just my opinion. yes, children need love and there plenty children out there that need adopting, but i just dont think its right. sorry gay people. just my opinion. |
