If the North voted to return to the Republic, how would the Unionist react? |
Would they set up bombing campaigns here in the Republic like the IRA did in England? Would the hostilities start again in the North?
What is your speculation? |

I hope that the unitement of ireland will happen.
I am from northern Ireland myself and if there was a voting for the unitement I would vote in a second. I wouldn't think that there would be much trouble between the 2 sides as the unitement can only happen if the majority of the north vote, therefore there would be more republicans than unionists.
There will always be conflict here but thankfully we generally get along. |

You what?..., that would be the Unionists reaction, voting to be part of the Republic. And, they would not be 'returning' to the republic, since the north was never in it!!!! |

i think that immigration in ireland could dampen things down... as now we are all europeans... so we are told
i think people in ireland are just happy to have peace at the moment |

Who cares, look according to a BBC programme on last week , a go between for the ira and the british government was told by his mi6 counterpart that Ireland will be united and it is the goal of the british government to see this happen but they will not on the other hand abandon the unionist population.
this is a tired old question can people stop asking it |
|

I should be doing something else
|
I really don't know how they would react, but I think we can all agree that we in Northern Ireland are progressing really really well at the minute, and getting along better and better, so I dont think a United Ireland is something that should be on the agenda just as yet. |

A better question is if the south voted to be returned to Britain again how would the Republicans react. Would a new IRA be formed and the murders of innocent children restart? ICe and others puts it well. The north was never Irish so it cannot be returned. 87% in the last referendum said no to a United Ireland. Noone in the north except extreme Ira synpathisers want to go back in time. Its just not going to happen ever. Hopefully one day the south will be returned to Britain. One island one Britain. |

i would say there could be trouble, but at the end of the day, it would be the northies tat are voting so it's there own decision |

They would go berserk, or at least th older 1s would.
I kno a couple of ppl, round 16-20 age group that really wouldnt care!
Nah i think it should, cuz its only th old fools who r holding onto this idea that it is sumhow right to split a small island into 2 countries.
No island in the world has that problem except Ireland! |
|

Why When How
|
the north have a referendum on their future...oh if only !!!!

I agree with The Other, and thats a good question, always wondered too. Been here 9 years, and dont know so many people from the North, but think I know about how things are in the Republic side. I think most Irish youngsters are so happy with the current status-quo, many think they are just rich european citizens, that the ones from the south wouldn't give a feck if the North is re united or remains British. After all, who doesn't go to Newry to shop cheaper at Sainsbury's, buy cheaper booze or until recently, smoke in pubs. Or what do you say about people getting a way to get their driving licenses issued in the North, because of the ridiculous wait here? There are lots of advantages guys, we live in a less paranoid, easier, less controlled, better country than the UK, and at the same time we have everything at our reach... just 1,5 hs by car. So.... I really think people in the South don't care anymore. |

We would hope that the Unionists would accept their minority position in Ireland, and work with everyone else on the Island for the betterment of the Island.
I doubt there would be a significant campaign of violence as the loyalists would no longer have help from the ruc or army. |
