If there was an All-Ireland pub crawl, which pubs would you recommend? |
...and proper pubs where you can have the craic, where there might be live music and possibly food (not essential), where the staff and the beer are good, the locals don't make you squeal like a pig and they haven't been touristized...only post pubs you have visited and can definitely recommend.
I'll start with Co. Tipperary:
Kinnane's & Phil Murray's in Upperchurch, The Monk's (O'Gorman's) in Thurles, Larkin's in Garrykennedy, Phil Carroll's & Allen's in Clonmel, Fox's in Cashel and Jim o' the Mill's, which is a bit like Brigadoon and only appears when there's a full moon.
Any to add? I'm planning my next road trip...

I'm not a big pub person but one I really love is Jeffs in Waterford. Food's great, they've big tables (where different groups can sit together) so the craic's normally good and the staff can pull a pint of Guinness.
In Newry I'd have to say The Deane for no other reason than my fond memories of drinking there when I was younger. Besides that it's your pretty standard pub, still nice though.
Belfast. Katy Daly's. Very studentie but it's got a great atmosphere.
The Crown In Belfast on Great Victoria Street is very nice, it has little booths were you can lock yourself in which is pretty cool.
And finally the Empire on Botanic Avenue (Belfast) has a great comedy night (I think it's on a Tuesday) but it's a brilliant pub as well with brilliant Guinness! |

You'll have to go to Cork Priscilla!
If you're lookin for live trad there's no place better than The SpailpĂn Fánach in South Main Street, The Old Oak in Oliver Plunkett Street has live music most nights and if you want to visit one of Ireland's oldest pubs with a bit of music thrown in, there's The Gateway in Barrack Street.
You could also try The Bodhran in Oliver Plunkett Street (it's so popular for the live music it gets a bit cramped at times, that's the way we like it ;-)
They won't make you squeal like a piggy, unless you want to..... |
