In Ireland is it legal to take photographs of people in a public place without their permission?

It is perfectly legal in Ireland to take pictures of people in public places without their permission, so long as you do not harass them. Photos can also be published without permission provided that certain conditions are met. See the 'Digital Rights Ireland' site below for full information.

I guess it could be construed as invasion of privacy. It would certainly be unethical to publish them, publically display them or use them commercially, unless you obscure their identity or get their permission.

Well were not allowed to do it in school as it is an invasion of privacy so I guess the same applies to the general public. And it's certainly illegal to take pictures of people in swimming pools without their permission.

As Digipics said, I can't find anything saying if it is legal or not, but if someone saw you taking their photograph goodness knows what their reaction would be.

If you must do it, make sure no one under the age of 16 is in the shot, and definitely do not be taking photographs near any schools in case people get the wrong idea.
