Interested in Truck Driving in Ireland and Europe?

Hi, I'm a professional driver from canada with over 20 yrs over the road/long distance driving experience.. I have drove all over Canada and the United States and would like to experience a new challenge. is there anyone who could walk me through or give me an Idea what I would have to do to get a job driving there.. The company that I had worked for has hired quite a few drivers from the UK and IE so, I thought it might be a great challenge to work there...Thanks in advance

Your greatest challenge would be to actually get a job I'm afraid. My boyfriend is a Class 1 HGV driver with 25 years experience driving in the UK, Europe and now we live in Ireland. He drives low loaders (delivering heavy plant), refrigerated lorries and cattle trucks. He also has excavator driver tickets to drive 360 degree machines and dumpers.

He was made redundant last Spring and was out of work for 12 months, just started working 3 weeks ago. There are some driving jobs of course but they are mainly in the cities and pay is abismal. Around 10 Euro per hour for supposedly a 48 hour week but often you are expected to work longer hours. There is a 1% Government levy on all wages now as well as income tax and PRSI. Unemployment is soaring here so I wouldn't advise trying to get a job here at the moment.

Also there are no motorway service stations in Ireland and very few petrol stations that stay open 24 hours so its impossible to get a shower or anything to eat even. He used to drive lorries with pigs but refused because there was nowhere to get a wash and freshen up.

Not sure what the situation is in Europe, I can only speak from experience in Ireland and my advise would be don't come to Ireland.

I should be doing something else
I'm afraid Trust Me I am a Doctor is right.
My parters father has been driving freight lorries for over 35 years and they are having an awful time of it at the moment. You will need to wait until things are better as their company has had to let a lot of people go, and the ones who got to stay have had their hours cut considerably.

Best Advice 4 U.....

£5.50 an hour. Fight for a job. Welcome, have a nice stay.

my husband has had his lgv 1 for 20 years now he gave it up 5 years ago as the money is s**t, long hours, and the roads and traffic in Uk are awful.

We are also in a recession and jobs hard to find so I would stick with the job you've got .
