They want to,but 66% of population is from protestant scotland ancestry and want to be part of UK.Only 33% are Catholics. So the problem lies there.Scottish protestantism is extreme and bigoted so not easy. The catholics are fast outbreeding the protestants and are catching up fast in numbers.NI has been protestant and part of Britain for nearly 500 years without a break.
Protestant paramilitaries are very vicious and a war would break out if returned to southern ireland.
So it is too soon but one day it must be returned back to it's proper place.
l would rather live in hell than with the lunatics in NI so whats a gorgeous Brazilian hot weather girl like you, doing in a cold damp depressing, racist place like NI |

I think you'll find that Ireland(Southern), doesn't want Ireland(Northern)....and who could blame them..... |

If only it were that easy .... it's far more complicated than this.
There are people living in Northern Ireland whose families have been there for hundreds of years, but who still consider themselves British.
As of late? You do realise that this is not a new thing? This version of the IRA have almost nothing to do with the freedom fighters of the early part part of the last century, and nothing whatsoever to do with the civil rights movement of the 1960s that sparked The Troubles then. This crowd are merely troublemakers, drug dealers, murderers, bullies. No-one should give in to them, not even the British government. We don't give into them in the Republic, they do not represent us. No matter how much they would like to.
It is an insult to the memory of the freedom fighters of the past and the civil rights activists of more recent years to say that this crowd the CIRA are in any way linked to them. Don't anyone out there be fooled by the name. The old IRA is long gone. |

One wants to be part of Ireland and wants nothing to do with the UK. The other wants to remain part of Great Britain. |

There is a very good reason for this, Northern Ireland has two separate communities living in the same country. One wants to be part of Ireland and wants nothing to do with the UK. The other wants to remain part of Great Briton.
If we pulled out from Northern Ireland what would happen to them?

because about 60% are unionists and we have to respect the majority of what people want and i think after all that's been done for peace, giving it back would unravel all that and ignite old tensions.
things aren't always black and white. |

considering you from brazil you dont really understand the history of the place.....
its not that england can just give back n.ireland the fact remains that in northern ireland there are people who are loyal to england.
and england cannot abandon them.......... thats why the peace pprocess was started... to give people of both communitys a chance of some sort of peace and independance.......
the tragic murders of late are seen as a disgrace especially in the republic.............
its just not that simple......... although poeple wish it was....... |

Britain would not be able to do that. The fate of Northern Ireland lies with Northern Ireland.
Three things can happen:
Remain part of the UK
United Ireland
Exist as an independent country.
The latter, it is widely agreed, would not be possible, Northern Ireland is a tiny country and it is highly unlikely that it could support itself alone.
To have a United Ireland would require a majority vote from the people of Northern Ireland in it's favour. |

1: Britain don't own Northern Ireland, it is an independent state and it is up to them whether they want it like that or not.
2: The majority of people in the North like being separate.
3: The people of the Republic don't want to incorporate the North.
4: I don't care if the majority of the population is catholic, religion has NOTHING to do with the issue of Northern Ireland. |

-sighs-
Because the majority of the people of Northern Ireland wish to remain part of the United Kingdom.
We can't give Northern Ireland "back" to "Ireland" because they never had Northern Ireland in the first instance. There's no one to give Northern Ireland back to.
Simply incorporating Northern Ireland into the Irish Republic would not solve the problem. |

The only thing that could be put to a sole referendum in Northern Ireland would be secession from the U.K. and that could result in a lot of political problems within itself. Secession in other times would result in a war, that is if the U.K. were against it. However on the other side of the coin, why would one assume the Rep. of Ireland would want any part of it, maybe, maybe not, requiring yet another referendum, in the Republic. Do the math, not so simple is it. That would be like Sicily voting on becoming a part of France without asking the French if they would mind and assuming the Italians wouldn't have a problem with it. |

it's not that simple some people from the north want to be british and some want to be a republic. honestly i think we should just both disown them and leave them to their own devices. (I'm from the republic) |

Because politics doesn't work on good-will .. Politics is dirty and often unethical. This is natural to all nations.
PS; I don't have a good background about the Ireland conflict, so I'm neutral.. |

Northern Ireland was never part of the Republic of Ireland.
The ROI broke away from the North.
The people in Northern Ireland are British, they wish to remain part of their own country!
That is like saying Why doesn't Brazil give back the Amazon to Portugal
It's stupid.
It's rude.
It's Ignorant |

Wow - that's really really interesting - all of the answers to this question.
Meanwhile another Irishman on Yahoo Answers can't even get a straight answer at a train station to find his hometown because of all of this.
Me thinks it goes a wee bit beyond 'politics".
Just what exactly is going on over in that country?
