Your parents or grandparents would need to have been born in Ireland - grandparents by a certain date....I forget the whole set of rules. If your family is American for more than the 3rd generation - you can't.

Forget about the gun. Not sure that is even legal in many states in the US for starters ...why on earth would you need that? And don't say hunting. Unless the deer is wearing body armour and driving a tank....

I'm sorry but if you want to bring a rifle to or buy a rifle in Ireland, don't bother coming.

Podge and Rodge Tribute Band
Sure you can bring your assault rifle with you.
You can get AK47s in Dunnes and Tesco's and, for the more discerning amongst you, Magnums and Colts can be purchased in most Statoil garages.

As others here say Dont bring a gun. The IRA have done enough with their guns hee in the last fifty years. People in Ulster ( northen Ireland) and southern Ireland have had enough of guns. So many lives lost for no purpose. Leave your gun behind.

How far back do your roots go? Were your parents or grandparents born in Ireland? You can apply for a passport through your grandparents but it doesn't back any further

I don't think you can bring in an assault weapon, ring the Irish Embassy & ask them but this is some information from the Department of Justice website:
