The problem with Dublin is that its a capital city & you neve get a true feel for any country when you visit the capital. Dublin could be any cosmopolitan city as opposed to a strictly Irish city. I'm from Clare but have been living in Dublin for a few years now & you just can't compare.

Ireland is a beautiful country though, so you should definitely try to come back again some day. Why not concentrate of the West coast this time. You could fly into Shannon & easily split your holiday between Kerry, Clare & Galway, counties I'm sure any Irish person would agree are just too good to be missed.

Becuase of the size of the country a drive from Shannon, Clare to Kerry would only take about 2 1/2 hours & similarily from Shannon to Galway. Bus routes are frequent or hiring a car would be no problem.

As, I'm from Clare its a county I know a lot about, so if you do the chance to visit, I'd recommend a few places, starting with
Bunratty Castle & Folk Village - which comprises of more than 30 cottages, pubs, shops, etc recreated from last century ireland. Once in there, you can visit old Irish kitchens & help the traditionally dressed women bake bread or you can help feed pigs & cows in the farmyard.

Clare is also home to the Burren, a beautiful landscae of barren rock surface, very rare flowers and ancient pagan tomb stones, called portal dolmens.

Very near the Burren are the Ailiwee Caves, which I believe are the second largest caves in Europe. A guided walking journey through them can take over an hour. There are absolutely breathtaking!

The coast of Clare is dotted with lovely coastal villages & beaches. I often spend summers in Miltown Malbay, which boasts over 30 pubs. Clare is Ireland's most famous county for traditional irish music, song & dance and there are music schools which offer day toturials or weekend sessions for anyone interetsed. Walk into any of the pubs at night & you're sure to come upon a lively session. There are lots of nice & very reasonable B&B's in the village (http://www.nci.ie/holiday/cla/cla1.htm)....

Don't forget the famous Cliffs of Moher. They are the highest cliffs in Europe & well worth a peak at. Tourists often lie at the edge at look over.

The main town in Clare is Ennis, which has a lovely old county town feel to it. There are many craft shops and unusual boutiques there as well as some of the bigger Irish high-street stores.

Go outside of Dublin. Seriously. Rent a car and travel south, west or north. Chance your arm in bandit country! All parts of great, and I have found the people of the south-west of Ireland to be the friendliest. So I moved there instead of being near my family in the east of the country.

Anywhere outside Dublin. I'm a culchie (anyone who lives outside Dublin is a culchie) and I find that anytime I've gone out in Dublin it's very cliquey and you need a few friends as people don't chat to you that much.
Cork, Kilkenny, Galway all good craic and much more friendly. Rearden's in Cork - if people don't talk to you here you must have at least 2 heads. Although you'd still get the odd drunk who'd find that attractive!
They're smaller places so they're friendlier anyway.

try the south east of Ireland, you have great cities like the "Marble city"- Kilkenny, with its Castle and many pubs, walk along the River Nore. Visit Castlecomer caves in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny or Jerpoint Abbey on the N9, just South Of Thomastown (a great town- have to say that, i have family living there), or Waterford or Wexford

Find the fun people in Dublin & it's great. Try Cork & the west, there are many places to have fun here. Come back soon.......
