Nobody in Ireland actually SPEAKS Irish and most don't even understand it. They don't call it Gaelic either. They call it Irish. Gaelic is a very similar language spoken in the western isles of Scotland etc. Look up www.overheardindublin.com for the way the Irish speak English. One good phrase to have in Irish as quite a few people will understand it is "Pogue muh hone". (Pouge rhymes with Rogue) Loosely it translates as "You really can't be serious" and you give it to anybody who is obviously talking rubbish as lots of irish people do.

Grimmybear, it is not:
PHRASE: Gle mhaith!

This is not correct - "An-mhaith", pronounced "an-wha" means "very good".

And you certainly won't have an occassion to use Irish in Ireland. In all my life I've never used it out of school, except to talk privately around tourists...
