The story I've always heard about the claddagh ring is that of an Irishman who had been captured by pirates and sold into slavery to the Turks. He was in the household of the Pasha, or ruler. The man developed a great deal of skill as a jeweler, and the Pasha had a lot of respect and affection for him. Ultimately, the Pasha set him free and arranged for his passage back to his native Ireland. Upon his arrival home, the jeweler designed and made the Claddagh ring for the Pasha, as a memento of their friendship. (Of course this story was told to me by my relatives, who tend to be fond of fictionalizing history.)
