It's not in Northern Ireland BUT it is in Ulster. |

Ireland is divided into 4 provinces, Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Cannaught.
The Northern province is Ulster, which consists of 9 counties.
Of these 9 counties, 6 of them are under British rule and the remaining 3, are citizens of the Republic of Ireland., including Donegal.
The misconception arises when people wrongly assume that all of Ulster is British. It is not uncommon for people to make that assumption. |

It can be an understandable mistake for people not from Ireland.
Geographically it is situated in the north of the island, politically it belongs to the Republic of Ireland.
This link expalins it quite simply...

yes, it is part of the Republic of Ireland, even though it is in the Province of Ulster.
Ulster has 9 counties , 6 of which are known as Northern Ireland, and 3, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan are part of the republic, {or Southern Ireland, as people on answers like to call it}.
But to be honest, I know very few Irish people who do not know this. They were probably wondering where southern Ireland was, and so concurred with Donegal being northern. Maybe they were being ironic, or sarcastic! |

Hello Pacific19,
Donegal is part of ROI so not sure who you were asking. To be fair, in terms of accent and other characteristics, Donegal folk are the people in ROI who are most like people from Northern Ireland...people from Cavan and Monaghan are very different in that respect.
By the way, in regards your second paragraph(which I find a bit insulting in the way it's phrased - all Irish people know where Donegal is), I'll ask you a similar question:
Why is it all Canadian people think (the Republic of) Ireland and Northern Ireland are the one country? In this day and age, to think that is inexcusable. All Canadians I've met, both in Canada and countries like South Africa, think this and I can't figure it out. The Americans all know the difference, so why don't you 'peeps'?
Can you explain where the confusion comes from? |

I'm from Donegal and anybody from Ireland that think it's part of Northern Ireland are idiots! It's easy for someone not from here to get confused though! |

If you look at the map on
http://www.ireland-map.co.uk/map-of-ireland.htm
you will understand why some of Ireland is further north than Northern Ireland, and why some people might be confused. Yes, Donegal is in the Republic. |

Donegal is part of Ulster but is not part of Northern Ireland.
It is in the Rep of Ireland.
Same applies for Cavan & Monaghan which are also in Ulster but are not in Northern Ireland. |

You don't need to be Irish to answer that one, just need a map.
Yes, Donegal is part of the Republic of Ireland. And a beautiful part of it too.
The situation geographically is similar to Alaska being part of the US and not part of Canada despite proximity. |

nah i know that...it was a mainly republican county so they left in ROI... |

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

You've been badly misinformed.
Donegal has been an independent republic since 1995. It has its own legislative assembly in Letterkenny. This town also houses one of the finest third level institutions outside of Harvard and Oxford.
Jim McDaid is currently President of Donegal. |

Yes, Donegal is part of the Republic of Ireland, even though geographically speaking is it in the Northern half of the island. It is not part of Northern Ireland that's still governed by the UK. Anyone who tells you it is is misinformed. |
