my culture is Irish, my religion is my own business...

Whilst rugby is popular it is an ALL Ireland sport, same as cricket and hockey. So people from both sides of the border represent the island, not just the Republic. It is certainly wrong to suggest that to 'boost their chances' people from NI are picked. (Esp. when the Ulster side is so poor!!!)

well most of us are catholic, with a couple of prods, muslims thrown into the mix as-well. as for our culture, we are very much like you, we share alot, the scot's and Irish. so take a look in the mirror, and what you see staring back, thats what we look like..

I should be doing something else

I believe in God, but I don't follow any specific religion, and nor do any of my family.
I love eating out, socialising in bars, clubs, holidays, concerts, shopping, movies, tv etc.

Probably the same as most 20 something women in this part of the world! =]

Most of us are actually spiritual/or have no belief in God but choose to associate with Catholicism as its part of our heritage.

We have high mass attendances, but I reckon as soon as the old guard(from my parents age(50) up starting popping off) it will drop significantly.

We probably won't have enough priests in 10 years.

Brian .
We do not go to church out of faith we go rather out of habit and tradition.Despite the fact that we are 95% > Roman Catholic only 50% of us are 'practicing' our religion.
Ireland is a lovely place to visit - quite similar to Scotland in many ways. And make sure to look at the Irish weather forecast before you go - if it wasn't for weather we wouldn't have much else to talk about ^^

Religion, well, like most people in Ireland (32 counties), I don't follow any church and this is common in Ireland where church attendance is down considerably in the last 20 years.
People don't care about religion, wherether they talk about it or not.
Throughout the island, people love sports, socialising, music.

By the way, the Irish love Scotland too, our celtic cousins!

The Nine Lives of Laura Gonzales
Most people are Catholic on paper, but agnostic in practice. As for culture, like a previous poster said, it's quite similar to Scotland. The Irish language is a little stronger than Scottish Gaelic. Kids learn it in school and you see it on road signs and stuff. Most people can speak a few words, but that's about it. ^_^

Hey how are you? I'm Catholic (not practising though) i barely ever go to church, only on special occassions. thanks for your nice comments. I think Scotland Rocks !!! It's class and so are the ppl. We've got something in common !

The Irish people line in the Republic of Ireland, that is southern Ireland. In the north its british so I will stay with your question about the Irish people in the south. Religion there is mostly catholic though protestantism has increased comsideably since 2002. Church attendance has dropped from a high of 78% in 2001 to 61% now. Thats still high compared to other countries. Rugby is a poular sport and to increase their chances players are taken from the north .People are friendly and sociable usually unless you talk about politic and religion. Thats why my answer will get many thumbs down. !
8 thumbs down so far! Thats what I said, I know my foreign colleages in southern Ireland well !
