I used to go to high school with people who had Irish backgrounds (not actually FROM Ireland) and most of the guys were really cute haha so I always used to associate "Irish" with "Irish guys" which lead to thinking "hot guys" lol.
Now I'm in college and I know a few guys who are actually FROM Ireland- with the accent and all haha- and I think they're just great. Really funny, care free, just like to enjoy life and not take things too seriously. They also drink like fish but hey, it doesn't mean you all do!
I don't like stereotypes. I don't go around thinking all Irish people are drunks or anything like that, and a lot of people here don't think so either. I'd say in all seriousness, the Irish are seen as nice people, very friendly, I mean America is on good terms with the country (are we not?) We've had so many Irish immigrants and Irish-American presidents and their culture is very much recognized in America. If anything, the only stereotype is someone who drinks a lot and wears green and is lucky lol, but nothing bad.
How bout the Irish, what do you think of Americans? Do I honestly want to know? :)

slipstreamer
Hello, American here.

No, none of my family in Ireland look like that. I did get the redhair gene from someone over there though. The Irish stereotype in America is redhair for some reason, even though most Irish are dark.

Of course there is the Irish/Irish-American drunk and violent stereotype too, but mostly in an affable way. No offense intended. I am not thrilled with that one either.

(Family emigrated from Ireland to America)

Edit - Ed explained it best, that is the stereotype of the Irish over in the US. Just like all Americans are fat, ignorant, etc...

Stereotypes obviously tend to not be true, but some people still believe them.

No, they don't.

Nor are we 'cute adorable drunks', as some highly patronising and extremely ignorant other answerer called us - how insulting.

French and other Europeans think of us as being people who like to sing and play music, and who eat a lot of potatoes. They also like our creativity, which is why in general the French get on well with the Irish.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
Small, ginger with freckles? Where did ya get that idea from?!

Well I'm Northern Irish and people from overseas stereotype us as being IRA or UVF members lol

Ed
a drunk, fighting, red-headed, toe-dancing, shillelagh-carrying, leprechaun is the stereotype.
