Beautiful country, lovely people, Cork is good. Take an umbrella and plenty of money. If you stay at Moores hotel in Cork take earplugs, (clock bells ringing all night). Go to Blarney castle and kiss the Blarney stone, |

I'm a Dub and used to work in Cork. Rents are slightly cheaper than Dublin but still quite expensive. An apartment within sniffing distance of the city might cost 1200 euro pm for a 2 bed in Tivoli (to the east of the city, nice area, along the river). Check the website
http://www.myhome2let.ie/
for more prices. Other respectable areas are Douglas, Blarney, Cobh (on the railway), Fota (on the railway), Rochestown (fairly OK) and Sundays Well. I suggest you mail one of the letting agents for a better idea. You need to decide if you need parking - this changes the price somewhat.
The cost of living in Cork, as elsewhere in Ireland, is quuite expensive. Gas is expensive - if you use a lot of heat you will get bills of 70-120 Euro a month. Unfortunately there is a monopoly on many utilities in Ireland although this is slowly changing (for example, telecommunications are gradually getting cheaper). There is a good range of supermarkets within the city and outskirts - meals out range from 20E per person to 200E!
If you want some enticement or encouragement, have a look at my self-guided driving tour of west Cork and Kerry, right on your doorstep as it were! Good luck with the move. |

Life's a beach
 |
Yes, beautiful.
Very green, lots of grass, and can be very rainy!
People are VERY friendly.
They are on the Euro currency and if you are familiar with the cost of things in the UK, then Cork is slightly higher than that in all aspects (house, food etc)
Yes, there are rooms to rent and apartments, you need to go get a local paper once you get there, also check in news agents windows. Or when you find an area you like, then ask about when in the local cafe, news agents etc - word of mouth is sometimes a great recommendation for people who don't know the area.
All the very best of luck! |
