Is Guinness good for you?

Show all answers

Not waving but drowning
Yes it is
The University of Winsconsin conducted a study and found that:

They believe that "antioxidant compounds" in the Guinness, similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables, are responsible for the health benefits because they slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls

Guinness ranked lower in alcohol content, calories and carbohydrates than almost every other major brand of beer.

It also contains less calories than low-fat milk and orange juice. To top it off, Guinness is high in anti-oxidants. It's been said that just one pint of Guinness a day works just as well as aspirin to prevent blood clots that can lead to heart attacks.

Guinness is the Best Medicine

To this day in Ireland, Guinness is used as a sort of treatment. Pregnant women, nursing mothers as well as blood donors and post-operative patients are given a pint of Guinness to help recover, due to its high-packed nutriet content.

Yep, works for me, when I was pregnant with my eldest (he's 23 ) my doc advised me to drink one bottle of the black stuff (guinness) each night - as he said I was low on iron (my digestive system wouldn't tolerate iron tablets) and that dark stout (guinness) would do the trick, it did - mind you it made him grow into a 6' 4" guinness drinker !!!!

My nan (bless) drank a small bottle of milk stout with a spoon of sugar each end every night of her adult life, na'er an illness did she suffer - ever - went to bed when she was 91 and didn't wake up in the morn.

Fancy a pint of the black stuff ?

Yes its good for you. Its full of iron and has been said to help your immune system and the healing process. In fact, when my mum was going through treatment for cancer, the nurses advised her to have one bottle of guiness a day to keep up her strength :) I'm not sure if there is any scientific evidence, but it definitely is known to do you no harm if taken in small amounts.

Would advertisers ever lie to us?

It's full of iron, so a little every now and again won't do you any harm.

BBC NEWS | Health | Guinness good for you - official
The old advertising slogan "Guinness is Good for You" may be true after all, according to researchers. ... Guinness good for you - official.

It is very good if you are low on Iron as this is very good for that and can build the Iron up in your body. As someone else said, it wouldn't be good to drink it everyday but 1-3 times a month would be ok.

In Ireland some GP's will tell the patients that are low in Iron to go drink some Guinness to build their Iron up as it can be better than taking a load of pills.

It's recommended if you suffer with anemia

wendylilly
A doctor told someone i know to drink it while she was pregnant! Although that was many years ago. It's full of iron!

However I notice that they don't use that slogan on the ads anymore!

david c
yes it is but vodka is better

Guinness has iron in it, so is actually suggested for pregnant women. As with anything, a little bit of something doesn't do you any harm. Of course, like with all alcohol, drinking too much of it leads to serious health problems
