Is Ireland a completely non-smoking country as I have heard it is?

I would like to visit Ireland, but have heard it is a non-smoking country, as a smoker this would not be a good visit for me if I got there and did not know this.

Thanks for any help offered

You can't smoke in public places like bars, restaurants, offices etc but you can smoke in your hotel room proving it's a smoking room (or you open the window and do it anyway!), in the streets and any open space. A lot of bars have beer gardens/smoking areas where you can sit at a table and smoke... other don't and you just have to go out and have your cigarette.
Irish people smoke a lot and they quickly learned to cope with the smoking ban! If you come to Ireland keep in mind that a pack of cigarettes cost more than €7, so you're better off packing a carton in your suitcase!

It only applies to public areas such as pubs, restaurants and work places, you can always just go outside, most pubs/clubs/restaurants have smoking areas anyway. Alot of my friends smoke and have no problem with the ban, which has been in place for some years now.

That's true, right enough. If you're caught smoking anywhere they'll imprison you without trial and practise water torture on you.
It makes Guantanamo Bay look like a holiday camp.

Just got back from a 2 wk stay and for a non-smoking country, the city of Dublin smells like a tobacco factory as you walk down the street. All smokers are standing outside the pubs and business places smoking up a storm! You should be right at home.

Well, you are not allowed smoke in public indoor places such as pubs and galleries/ However you shouldn't let that put you off coming here. It's such a lovely country. If you are not sure what you are going to be up to when you get there then you should check out this very useful website: http://www.discoverireland.ie

Its only illegal to smoke in enclosed workspaces, hotels, restraunts, shops, shopping centres, hospitals etc. basically any public, enclosed space.
You can smoke anywhere else though.

i can safely tell u it is a smoke full country...especially it you go in the city on pedestrian road...if ur a non smoker it can be hard to breathe

its not a non-smoking country! there is however a law which says that you are not allowed to smoke in a public place eg. restaurant, pub, bus, taxi, in the work place. Basically anywhere that is open to the public! i think it is brillant idea you can sit in pubs and have a good laugh and your not smothered in smoke!

You cant smoke in restaurants or pubs or shops but you can smoke everywhere else

i live there, and I can safely tell you that as much people smoke here as anywhere else in the UK.. but it's illegal to smoke indoors.. you probably know that already anyway!
