Is Ireland a safe place to come?

I would like to come on a visit but not if the Irish are shooting people.

Nope, full of knackers

Ireland is a relatively safe country to visit. Just as safe, if not more so, than any other country.
Northern Ireland has had it share of troubles in the past and more recently but that should not deter you.
The Republic of Ireland is mostly peaceful. Just like any other country, there are criminals and there are shootings but they are mostly gangland related.
As with everywhere else, you should beware of thieves.

I would encourage you to visit Ireland, it is a truly beautiful country!

magidge
It is safer than a lot of countries these days.

You would be made to feel very welcome.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

It is, as long as you've got protection.
We've come plenty of times in Ireland. Very enjoyable it is too.

sarch_uk
Well I'm English and I have been over to Ireland quite a few times now and never had any problems.

Hi Gunnar,

You're thinking of Northern Ireland - a completely different country to Ireland. And the people doing the shooting are not Irish in any sense of the word!

Cities like Dublin and Limerick can present problems to tourists if you're not careful but common sense and a bit of research and you'll be fine.

Enjoy your trip!

To the person who complained about me calling my country by it's proper name, read it and weep:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland

Read the sentance starting with the words "The name of the state is..."

Sorry I'm not one of the PC Brigade who calls my country the "Republic of Ireland" just to appease people like you!!

I think Ireland is just as safe as anywhere else to come. Can't say I haven't come in Ireland but I know people who have.

The Irish aren't shooting people lol.

Erm... People shoot people in every country just because there was a few i.r.a shooting in northern Ireland last month does not mean it is an unsafe place to go. If you are that worried go to the republic of Ireland.

Orla C
It's pretty safe, don't worry. We don't really direct tourists to the places where people get shot.

musical-life
Heye Dude...Im irish.... no need to worry... come to the republic part everytin is fine here... nutin 2 worry bout at all x x

aa_fugitive
as safe as anywhere else! be vigilant!

why would you think the irish are shooting people?? where in ireland do you wish to go???

ireland is a beautiful country, i live in northern ireland, but i have to say ireland is stunning.

would you go to america, its so much worse than anything ireland or the north has ever seen, but we get such bad press for things that happen here. ireland is a peaceful country as it stands, northern ireland with protestant and catholic divide has had its problems but it doesnt mean you should stay away.

if that was the case i would recommend u never ever went to visit anywhere, in fact stay in the house, you never know what may happen if you leave the house.

There is violence in every country. I wouldn't say that Ireland is any more dangerous than anywhere else. I've traveled there and lived to tell the tale (N. Ireland and the Republic).

Parts of Dublin are a bit unsafe, but just avoid the bad areas and you'll be fine. As a tourist you aren't likely to even be able to find the bad areas. You should visit, it's a great country.

cardimom
Mostly, as with any country be careful in large cities(yes Ireland has some) I recall when I was last there Limerick was referred to as Stab City due to a large amount of Heroine fueled knife crime. Guns are very illegal in Ireland as in England so much of the violence can be fists and knives.

ayhartlasketchup
well its a lot safer than the us...

I notice that someone has informed you that Northern Ireland is a totally different country to Ireland. That's strange - Ireland is an island not a country!! I think that person means the Republic of Ireland, how would they feel if we started saying 'Ireland' instead of Northern Ireland.

Anyway - Dublin has lots of drug related crime - as does Limerick. You'll find Northern Ireland much safer than those two places but the rest of the island is basically troble free. There's more shooting in places like Manchester in England or New York than there is in Irelend.

Like a Fox
It is as long as you wear protection.

My Grain
Of course lol. It's Northern Island but between the Protestants and Catholics. No probs!

Alan M
Dont worry. Its only a small group of Irish people doing the killing. These are the IRA a illegal terrorist group that killed thousands of Irish and British people in last thirty years. Fortunately most are now dead as the British in North started defending themselves. The few remaining will soon be caught or shot down as the British in north track them down quickly.
