It's a very popular day here, the Americans seem to go a bit over the top with it though. Anybody who's great, great grandpa owned an irish red setter dog appear to claim Irish heritage.
In Ireland, its a case of attend the parades, and then fill the bars. We don't go on about being Irish, or claim our roots to be Irish... Its all about having the craic and a laugh. |

I should imagine many Irish people are bewildered by the tacky over commercialisation of a basically Christian Celebration.
Then again Christmas is now dominated by Santa Claus a product of Coca Cola, and no doubt St Patricks day is sponsored by Guinness.
St Patrick in reality was Welsh, and went over to Ireland as a missionary to spread the word of Christianity.
The Welsh have St Davids Day, the Scottish St Andrews Day, the English St Georges Day and the Irish St Patricks Day, although to be honest I don't feel compelled to celebrate any of these days by getting drunk in the name of a religous saint and I am sure the real Irish people find some of the plastic paddys from County Boston cringe worthy. |
