Is TY worth doing? im so confused!!?

Ok so if i dont do TY i will go straight into 4th year and i will be going into leaving cert at the age of 16 and doing my leaving cert at 17 years of age.

i was told that in TY you get to go on work experience and you get to have classes and a bit of homework every night. i get to try all my subjects so i will know what subjects i like and do them for senior level. you get to go on trips but we aren't going on a foreign trip because of the recession. some of my friends are doing it and some are not. im so confused about it because the friends that aren't doing it i want them to do it and i hate the though that i wont be seeing them as much.

what are the pros and cons of TY? thanks so much for answers in advance!!

I loved T.Y. It was the best year ever. . I hear all the time that it's a waste of a year. . but I suppose it depends what school your in. Thank god, I went to a good school.

We did soo much.

- Musical - - > made asses outta ourselves but it was good craic
- Italy - -> Amazing!
- London --> Amazing!!!
- Work experience - -> Money and got job outta it! =]
- TY Grad --> Great craic!
- Made new friends!
- Didnt go straight into study after the junior!!!!!!
- No homework! They do try. . god love them.
- Super laid back.
- Ya actually get along with the teachers (which may sound crazy. . but coming from me. . )
- All those comps
- Got to do other languages.
- Exchange programmes. 2 of my mates ****** off to germany!
- Got aload of certs . . like ECDL, speech and drama. . **** like that!
- Did the driving thing!

- Just generaly great craic.

Also. . The year is what you make of it yourself. . if you do T.Y and end up making no effort. . you're gonna have a **** year. . but if ya go into it positive and up for some craic. . then you'll have the best time of your life.

Hey well I'm in TY now and was in your exact situation last year.

I am soooo glad i'm doing TY, I absolutely love it! I actually want the week ends to be over so i'll be back in school like!
I think the break after the Junior Cert is really needed. We went on Work Experience just before Christmas and it was savage! We don't really get homework.. We went on loads of trips already and we had some craic, you really get to know your teachers. Just came back from Dublin actually on thursday.
Our whole year in school had become sooo much closer, i am such good friends with people i didn't even talk to last year.

Ya the thing with subject choices would worry me, we got to try all our subjects e.g. physics, chemistry, accounting all separately so we really understood what each was about. We picked our subjects last week and i found it hard enough. If i went straight oon to 5th year there is no wayi'd be able to pick them.

In my school we do loads of additional subjects like horticulture, japanese, pschology, philosophy, magazine and such, its sooo much fun!
We've done loads of courses e.g. ECDL and got certs and they make your CV look sooo much better.

I would definitely recommend you do it, it is a laugh and a break after 3rd year, what do you havw to lose?
I mean this year has been the best of my life so far.
Fell free to mail me if you have any questions!
You are quite young so i would definitely recommend it.

EDIT: -- Just 2 Irish guy down below, not ONE person in my year now, wished they went straight to 5th year and our year is sooo diverse so thats definitely saying something! Nice points from Guillame too.

first of all let me start by saying to 'viva la eire' who says that transition year should be abolished to speak for themselves.transition year is and will be a positive thing to look back on for me.i enjoyed transition because my school does a good transition year.i am able to have an interesting and enriching year after the hard junior cert year i went through.work experience was great because i was able to sample places of work that i'd see myself in.charlene, if you cant go on a foreign trip, who cares? i amnt going on one either but i still do lots of fun stuff.the other things about transition year,is that even when you dont have work experience, you can give a note to the school telling them your going on one anyway.loads of people in my year take time off their transition year to go to school abroad or do other things.i'l finish by saying that ransition is only interesting if you and your school make it interesting.so i'l TY is worth doing.ps: and by the way 'viva la eire' (again) work experience does not last just two weeks 'and then thats it' like you said.i did for weeks.the school decides how much you do.great advice 'aishling xxx' your transition year sounds really interesting

Depends on your attitude towards it. If you're going to be lazy, then it isn't for you, because TY really isn't a doss year.
I'm doing it because the school are trying to keep it as normal as possible.
You learn how to settle into fifth year, I know one of my teachers said you would know the difference in work from a 5th year student coming in from TY and a 5th year student coming straight from JC. TY's normally do better and study better.
It's been proven that on average TY students get 25~50 points more in the LC which is quite alot.
I would be 17 starting college if I didn't do it which would be no fun because you couldn't go out legally. Plus it's shown that many younger students can't handle the freedom and work of college and drop out.

That's just my sceal....read the others of course, most of their opinions differ from mine.

I can understand your confusion, my daughter is in Leaving Cert and has only just turned 17, so she will still be 17 when she hopefully goes to college in October. This will be awkward for her as most of her friends are already 18. She didn't do TY because she wanted to finish with school as quickly as possible! Also I don't think TY in her school was that great of a scheme.

A friend of mine whose son did TY said that if she had the choice again, she would discourage him from doing it. This was mainly because they didn't really do anything useful for the year, and he got out of the habit of studying and going to organised classes. Then when he went back into senior cycle, he found it very hard to settle into the regular school routine again.

The other option you could consider, would be to continue onto Leaving Cert, delay college or working for a year, and do a secretarial or computer course afterwards to bring you up over 18.

Good luck with whatever you decide! :)

im currently a fifth year who did TY and i am soooo glad i did it. i got a year to mature, to have a break from study, get my priorities right, and do work experiece which totally changed my mind on what i wanted to do in college. ppl in my year skipped it and they regret it. they had just finished studying for the JC and now they are studying for the LC. they also r very young. i personally think doin the LC at 17 is too young and 18 is time enuf. so ye, i would advise you to do TY based on my experience of it!!!

hope i helped!:-)

I'm in 6th year and am delighted i done transition year.
Statistics prove that people who do TY get an extra 40 points in the Leaving Cert compared to others!
I loved it. You need to unwind after the Junior because i am telling you there is no peace in fifth and sixth year!!
Also, you learn a lot of valuable skills but i guess that depends on you own school's programme. I made loads of new friends in transition year and became even closer to the ones i alread had. I found that the girls in my year now that didn't do TY are much more immature and don't cope as well without the stress of the dreaded Leaving Cert.
Not to mention, I wouldn't like to be heading into college if i wasn't eighteen yet!
I'd advise anyone to pursue TY!!
Good Luck

Work experience was one good thing about it, and it did help me to decide what subjects to do for the leaving cert. But besides that, it didn't have much to recommend it, at least not in my school. I was bored out of my mind, we had to do useless projects in every subject which were more irritating than educational, and we seemed to spend most of our time just hanging around. But different schools do it differently so maybe yours would be better. Try to talk to someone in your school who did it and ask them how they got on.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
Sher it's a good doss for ya.

All I can do is give you my personal experience- I'm doing my leaving cert this year. I'm 17 next week. I didn't do TY because in my school they don't do much and none of my friends did it. Alot of people tell me that I am very young to be doing the Leaving, but I don't think so. The people who do Tran Year in my school usually regret it and consider it as a waste of a year.
It depends on how your school organises it- talk to people who did it this year and see what they thought.

bluebell
All my children did TY except one, because there weren't enough people interested to form a class, at the time. They all gained from the experience, and from my point of view, they grew up so much in that one year, I had no worries about them being easily led or going off the rails when they went off to college. The work experience also helped decide the career options because it is a trial-and-error procedure. Better to find out what they really like before starting Leaving Cert, and then they can pick the subjects they really need.

i think it depends on the school. in some schools TY is really good and in others its pretty crap. the pro's are that you can relax a bit after the JC, work experience, doss year etc. the cons are that it can be hard to get back into studying after TY and sometimes it can be boring. Talk to the TYs in your own school and ask them if they would recommend it :D seventeen is the average age to do the leaving so dont worry about that. im in third year myself and i chose not to do TY cos all the TYs atm say that its really boring. its up to you though .. :D
hope that helped :)

No don't do it! I wish I hadnt of done it, and thats what most people say after fourth year

Viva La Eire!
I know a lot of people that did TY and I honestly cant think of a single one of them who can look back on it and say that it was a positive experience. I really think that they should either make 4th year a regular year or just get rid of it all together. TY is a real waste of time.

There really is only one pro and that is you get 2 weeks of work expereince, that's it.

the trips might be a bit fun but honestly, you wont go on nearly as many trips as you are promised and there a bit of a waste of time.

You don't get a whole lot of work to do in 4th year (hence the nickname Doss year) so when you go into 5th year you don't have the work ethic to do the work you get. You'll find it really hard to keep up with the work.

My sister done 4th year an hated it so much she dropped out of school for that year. After not being in school for a year she didn't want to go back at all. it took all the convincing in the world to get her to go back and finish the leaving cert.

It really is a waste of time. id love to say it helps you decide what to do in the future, what you will do in college, what subjects you will do at leaving cert level, you'll have fun on the trips etc etc etc but that would be a damn lie!

Dont do it, go into 5th year straight off!!!

Alan M
Both ways are the same. Really. The best way is one you decide. If confused then take thge interesting one, the risky one,.
