Is it a bad idea to move to ireland (read description)? |
Every time I ask a question about ireland people always say that I don't want to move there. Or they accuse me of wanting to move there because of Obama or Bush or whatever else. Some even called me a daft american. Then one person said that all we dream about is living there because we think theresleprechaunsns and fairy's.
I am not saying anything bad about the irish people. I still likIrelandnd and want to visit someday. But why are you saying all thistuffff about americans?? We want to go therbecausese its full of history and beautifuarchitecturere. Nobecause wewe thinthreeseleprechaunsns anfairy'sys. obecausese of the economy.
Anyway...So should I listen to the people that answered my other questions or not? Do you guys and gals not like americaShouldld I still visit there? Should I want to live there?
Please help. I still want to go...but I need some people who live in ireland (and that wont call me a daft american) to answer my question. |

Just ignore those people & try not to take it personally, a lot of venom isn't actually being directed at you personally. For every person who is respectful who will treat you on the internet exactly as they would treat you face to face that are another dozen or so gobshites who want to have a go, they're venting their spleen at random strangers & hiding behind the anonymity of the internet like cowards, many of them are saying things they wouldn't have the guts to voice out loud. Some people are just ignorant and sometimes people mean well but they don't express themselves particularly well so it comes across badly. It's very difficult to figure out which is which some days.
If you want to move to Ireland then don't let a few oinks on the internet stop you but there are some nice people here who will give genuinely good advice. Personally, I would have to point out, as someone who got caught by the same thing, living in a country and visiting it are two very different things. Come over, have a look around, see if you like the place but at the same do the research as you're going live here - find out how to move here legally, what the rent, bills etc are like and look at the place with the critical eye of someone who is going to live here. What a person is prepared to put up with as a tourist on a temporary stay is completely different from what a person finds acceptable as a long term resident. |

You must make your own decisions in life, why worry about what other people think??
Of all the Americans that visit Ireland every year - We haven't killed any of them yet... So that should be a good indication of our culture?
Come on over, Check it out yourself... Don't be listening to doom and gloom merchants on here, we're not all like them! |
|

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
|
Sher don't be taking any notice of what they say on here!
Come over and see our beautifuarchitecturere for yourself.
And don't forget to visit the Central Bank if you're into that sort of thing.
It's only trotting after the Sydney Opera House so it is! |

It's a great country but there are a few anti-American bigots as you can see from some of the answers here. I find it odd that they choose to despise a people that they apparently know so very little about. Most American haters have never even been to the US. They get their information from TV and films. And newspapers that only print two kinds of stories about the US - "violent American" and "Fat/Stupid American". Maybe they went to NY or Florida on holiday for a week. So of course, they are experts. Generally they are bored university students who know nothing real about the world.
Take the hate with a grain of salt and don't let bigots make decisions for you. If you want to move to Ireland, then do so.
I wonder if the haters have any idea what they are doing to their country's tourism business. |

youwillsoonrealise that not many peoplelikeamericans mostly becausethey love to insult everyone in their sites whentheythinkwere not listening! I'm not Irish (I'm canadian) and anseo they totally ask stupid things on the Canada section too! |

No come over. It just, (i hate to break it to ya,) no one really likes Americans, its not just an Irish thing, the whole world don't like Americans. The world sees Americans as a stupid, obese, war hungry nation and even here on yahoo answer in fairness, most of the stupidest comments are by Americas... especial in regard to the Ireland section and that drives us mad! In saying that though, most Americans (i hope) aren't as stupid as that. I live beside a Texan girl who is in college with me and she seems to like the place. (though she does tell strangers she's Canadian so people won't treat her as an idiot or mock her.) American's think America is the greatest country in the world and when they actually listening to opinions outside of the US, they get a bit of a shock when they realise that the world doesn't like America. |

OK, first of all, unless you are an Irish citizen/'entitled to become' an Irish citizen, have a right to move here as a citizen of another EU country, or have a very specialist skill that we really need badly, then in reality you are not going to a work permit - at least until the economy picks up in a few years.
On the other hand, coming for a holiday (what you'd call a vacation) is probably a real good idea. After all, if you think you'd like to move here at some future date (assuming you'll be able to secure 'citizenship by decent' or a work permit), it is probably really best that you know you'll be happy here based on experience rather than "the tales of the auld sod".
By the way, come prepared for the cold and rain. |

we just tease everyone. we get on too well with the rest of the world so we have to stir it up a bit. Come and visit whenever you want. we are completely different face to face. I love americans but i couldnt eat a whole one (teasing). i dont believe in fairies but i know a cool country to visit and this is one. See ya when you get here. Agus failte (welcome). |

Well you can definitely visit no problem, sure why not.
Moving might be a different matter though, perhaps waiting till things improve recession wise might be a better idea. |

Dont mind those other People,do come over on a Visit you will be very Welcome. Better still if you have Plenty of Money then you can stay a couple of Months.
But remember there is a Recession you may or may not get a Job, so Regard it as an Adventure. Do not expect to much until the Recession is finally over. Ordinary Irish People are losing their Jobs in Droves and it is next to impossible to get a Job here at the moment. Unless you are a Hippy and can Live off the Land or are very Rich you will soon find yourself in an Impecuniary Position with no Money.
On the other Hand some People have the Gift of getting by with very Little Outlay you may be one of those ,so good Luck to you.
Like all Countries we have some rather Nasty People especially in our Cities and Towns, like for instance Druggies and Pickpockets and sometimes Thugs pick on you for no Apparent Reason and beat you up. But these are Isolated Incidents it is just something to be wary of. |

Of course you should visit Ireland, the people are very welcoming generally, but you do need to be prepared for the very cutting Irish humour. If you can't deal with the humour, you'll have a hard time ....
At the moment, it would NOT be feasible to move to Ireland because of the employment situation, and as a US citizen you would not be easily employed - boils down to bureaucracy, basically. But do come and visit. |
|

i wouldn't listen to them. i wouldn't parade around ireland saying you're american but it would be a great experience for you to go |
