Is it fair that Irish civil servants don't contribute anything to their pensions AND pay reduced PRSI?

Apparently if they were made to pay into their pension schemes the way that private sector workers have to, Euro 1.5 billion could be saved. That's a lot of hospital beds.

My late husband worked as a civil servant working in the tax office back in the 80's and his pension contribution was paid for by the state, along with half his social security contributions, I don't know whether that has changed since then, but, apparently not!, he only worked as a civil servant for 3 years and always said it was a 'cushy' number but he had to leave because he hated the job so much.

My Mum had a hip replacement last year (after 2 years of waiting) and she chatted to a Garda - as 79 year olds do - well, she knew his mothers sister or something, and it turned out that he only had to wait 3 months - yep he was on the public ward too, and he was only in his late forties, in for a knee job - not only that but being a civil servant and Garda the physiotherapist would pay weekly visits to his house for private therapy sessions, now I'm sorry but that is so bloody wrong, my mum and dad worked all their lives sometimes holding down 2 or 3 jobs to rear us, paid all the contributions the Irish government demanded and this gobshite who never caught a criminal in his life gets pampered by the state simply because he is 'one of them'.

Oh yea, I went into my local car tax office at 3.05 last week went up to the counter, lassie sitting behind the counter I handed over the relevant documents with cash and she said - " we close at 3.00" and refused to serve me...........ehhh, jaysus God help us.

David C: ask your dad is that a private pension scheme he is contributing towards.

Greenorl..: Yes they do contribute.........but not as much as we do !.

Sorry for the rant and to answer your Q, no it isn't fair.

Ah but Priscilla, a job for life apparently, remember. While us miniuns bust our chops trying to keep our jobs, and pay our vhi, or bupa, our cushy counterparts are lapping it up, hidden under the union umbrella, and we pay the costs of it. Its not remotely fair, but maybe our ministers should cut their wages, as podge and rodge so eloquently put it, in comparison to obama, its shocking. I don't think nurses should be cut, or gardai, I personally couldn't do their job, hence I think they deserve it, but some other public servants.....um...leaves alot to be desired.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

It's about time our civil servants were brought into the real world. If this government has any backbone they'll finally stand up to the public sector unions and sort out this mess. It wasn't too long ago that they were demanding benchmarking with the private sector and the government bent over backwards for them. Why don't we benchmark them with the private sector now and slash their cosy little set-up?
One of the main reasons for the setting up of the HSE was to avoid duplication of services. There are 1200 more people working in administrative positions now than there were in the bad old days of the Health Boards. What a joke!

Every person who's employed in the public sector from now on should be employed on a rolling contract basis with performance appraisals every 12 months. No more of this 'hiding behind unions' rubbish. If somebody isn't pulling their weight or if there isn't enough work for them they should be turfed out. And if they want a pension let them go away and get their own private pensions like everyone in the private sector has to do.

That's rubbish. Civil servants DO contribute.

Orla C
No, it isn't a bit fair.

Viva La Eire!
Oh for F**K sake. When the hell are we going to get sick of those god damn eejits in power and over-turn the Irish government? When the hell is it going to be run properly? Fairly? they cant do a damn thing right, morons. How the hell did they end up where they are? cause they were wealthy to begin with!

Im damn sick of this government, I say we all emigrate and just let Ireland decline into nothing more then a third world country!

Chris Brown is the man!
yes

Nelly N
It's not fair at all.
There are too many people working in the Irish public sector. I am all for job cuts for the lazy office staff that work in the social welfare, tax office etc. They do nothing and you always see them having a great laugh in the background
