Is it legal for me to do this? |
I've noticed street musicians in Ireland playing for money that people toss into a container.
My question: Is it legal for an American to do the same? Can I go over there with a whistle or fiddle, plop myself down, and earn some lunch money?
And what about N. Ireland?
Thanks! |

No problem in Northern Ireland. Just give it a go. If you are being a nuisance you'll be moved on. But you wont be arrested or anything horrible like that. |

I'd say you're in a very gray area legally. Technically you would be self employed and would, in theory, need a work visa. (But oddly, artists don't need to pay income tax in Ireland.) But I imagine, if you applied for a work visa to busk, the Irish immigration people would laugh you out of the office.
I'm 99% sure you'll get away with it, but if the Gardai question you, be honest about your nationality and feign ignorance of the employment rules. Irish police are fairly easygoing and they are unlikely to cause you problems. At the very most they will tell you to stop.
As a general rule, Irish police are only interested in preventing theft and violent crime. If you're behaving yourself, they will not cause you problems.
I don't know about Northern Ireland. |

It is not illegal in Dublin. I know plenty of people who have done it. However, a word of warning.. several people are regulars and have their own pitch and you will not be welcomed if you use someone else's pitch! I presume you are good. There are some awful street entertainers and you will only get money if you are good or a little different. |

I believe the legality of it varies from city to city. It is not uncommon in many major cities and in the downtown areas of many cities or in public transportation terminals to find artists of various types performing. It adds to the vibe of the city. Many locals and visitors enjoy these performances and do contribute money and applause. Unless there's something very obtrusive about the artist or their performance it seems to be allowed even if it might be illegal. |

Do it and see what happens. I've done it plenty of times and I've seen police walk past buskers without saying anything to them. You would want to actually be able to play whatever instrument you plan on playing though. |
