Hmmm. I don't know anyone who actually thinks leprechauns are real. In the movies, it's just a joke. And I'm seriously disturbed by what you Irish think about Americans. Why are we considered stupid people?? I don't understand. I REALLY wanted to come to Irealdn this summer, but after hanging around this forum for a while, I've come to realize that you would just be nice to my face and curse me the minute I turn my back. I'm truly disappointed.

Greenie
i know i brought 1 of my american friends over to ireland with me once...my dads a garda...he had to leave because he heard there where tinkeres harassing someone...she goes "is that what you guys call leprechauns".

greenorlagh
There's loads of them down the bottom of my garden. Wild parties out by the Fairy Thorn every Christmas too...

snowywooods
there are some really really sickeningly stupid people here, but just as many as there are anywhere else.

Like a Fox
Well that's all thanks to their awful educational system.
Americans don't learn an awful lot about other countries, other than what they see on tv.

n.barrett93
On holiday with mates in France and an American asked "Are leprechauns real?" We all responded of course really indignantly. We talked about them for 15 mins and explained how we trade in buttons (instead of money) in Ireland and the Americans were lapping it up, believing it all

Hilarious

I liked the question, but I found the answers even funnier.

I've been asked if I WAS a leprechaun!

As you can imagine, I'm in no hurry to return to the US.

I wouldn't make fun of the idea of leprechauns.

Unlike in America, where they are viewed as clever cute little guys protecting their pot of gold, in Ireland, they are known to sometimes be mean-spirited little buggers.

The sidhe (as leprechauns and other types of little folk are known in Ireland) used to live above ground, back when the Tuatha de Dannan lived in Ireland. After the Irish ancestors came, these sidhe all moved underground. They're still there, and can sometimes be found near one of the many fairy forts throughout Ireland.

Don't mess around with them, though! They got nasty tempers that would make a drunk Irish sailor blush!

magidge
Am sure millions of them think there are!
Nothing would surprise me.

You know, I literally wouldn't put it past a lot of the people here. But there are a handful of us that actually are quite intelligent.

If it's in a movie, it's a joke. Except for the horror movies with them in it...but those were made with a budget of about five dollars....so they're a joke anyway. Anything on TV about leprechauns, as well. Like the little cartoon one that they use in the ads for Lucky Charms cereal. Apparently it's magically delicious. :P

Haha, hope that answered your question.

.Laura
They think all what is showed them by Hollywood movies...so if next movies will show a t-rex in europe, they will think is true...actually they are quite thicks

We have a B&B and some American guests genuinely believe they exist!

My friends cousin came over from America and cried when she realised there was no leprechauns.

Then again she was only 8 years old.

No leprechauns??? All this time I thought there were! After all, I've seen Darby O'Gill and the Little People! :)

It's either a joke, or part of the plot when you see American movies with mention of leprechauns. :) Leprechauns share the same family of lore as do Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny (to name a few).

:) Have a great day!
