Is "southern" Ireland its own country?

Or is it still bound to Britain?

This is what the home rule act, 1914, was right, it granted "southern Ireland" independence from the UK with the Unionists in the North opting to opt out of home rule...?

Unbelievable that there are actually people in the English-speaking world that don't know this.

The bit that isn't part of the UK is officially named the Republic of Ireland, and has been an independent nation since 1922.

For more information, I suggest going to wikipedia for starters.

Southern Ireland as you refer to it is an independent country and is better referred or known as REPUBLIC OF IRELAND or EIRE. It is self governing, and has no connection or accountability to the UK in any respect, since 1922. Hope this answers and helps.

Sarah M
the REPUBLIC of ireland is ireland. full stop. northern ireland (6 counties) is part of ireland too but depending on the stance of people from there they might want themselves to be percieved as english or irish.

The Home Rule act of 1914 was never enacted, it was put on hold for the First World War nor was it granted in 1916 as someone else has stated. The events following the Easter Rising of 1916 led to the politicisation en masse of the Irish people eventually leading to the War for Independence in 1919 and ending with the Anglo Irish Treaty in 1921, which lead to creation of the Irish Free State in 1922 consisting of 26 counties in the south of Ireland. In 1949 the Republic of Ireland came into existence as an independent country severing almost all ties to the UK & the Commonwealth.

I should be doing something else

The name of the country is the Republic of Ireland.

The key word here is Republic.

The Republic of Ireland or as you call it ''Southern Ireland'' is a free state and has independence from Britain. It consists of 26 counties. The other 6 counties in Northern Ireland are still Under British Rule.

what history books are you reading?there was no home rule act in 1914,if there had been there would be no rising in 1916.the republic of ireland, which comprises 26 counties gained independence from britain in 1922.while we remained in the commonwealth till 1948.the 9 counties of ulster,6 of which are in british control, those 6 are known as northern ireland.southern ireland is an independent state, and a member of the e.u.

The Irish republic was officially a Dominion of the United Kingdom until 1949 (though a seperate nation since 1922), Northern Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom and is legally but not ethinically seperate from the south.

The Republic of Ireland which consists of 26 counties is it's own country by right.

However Northern Ireland is very very confusing hince the troubles. It is technically part of the Uk but it depends who you ask for us (In History) It's simply very confusing

It's called the Republic of Ireland. It also includes some counties in Ulster~Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan. We have our own Government, and re not tied to Britain.

There are six counties in the North~ Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone, that are in th UK.

greenorlagh
The Republic of Ireland is what it says on the tin. It's a republic. It has nothing to do with the United Kingdom.

Yes Southern Ireland is a real country all of its own. The 6 counties in the North are part of the UK. Lloyd-George was responsible for this fabulous bit of planning - my nan would have made a better job of it.

Yep its its own Country

Why When How
Ireland is an island, part of a group of islands called the British Isles (a geographical term not political.)

The Republic of Ireland or "southern Ireland" was formed in 1949.

6 counties Ulster remain British as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The ROI is a full independant country.

yes "southern ireland" of the REPUBLIC-OF-IRELAND is it's own country, it has it's own government and head of state(president Mary McAleese). the 6 northern counties are under the uk and the queen. the government of the republic-of-ireland has some input into decisions in the 6 northern counties , thanks to the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1985. the republic cut ALL ties to britian in 1949 when it left the commenwealth.

"Southern Ireland" is an independent nation known as Ireland, and also called "the Republic Of Ireland/Eire/Irish Republic"

migdalski
Yes.
No.

Palindromic Bob
Yes it is independent from the UK.

I prefer to refer to it as Eire or the Republic of Ireland though.

The reason being the fact that the most northern tip of the country is in what some refer to as the south. There is something stereotypical in the Paddy Irishman joke sense about that fact. :)

Ant7
no it isnt ther is 32 counties in ireland!

Misty Blue
It's all our country.

Jill H
southern ireland is but a pawn of belgium

GreenBrigade
Southern ireland as it is called by some people is officially called Eire or the republic of ireland. The Mallin Head, the most northerly part of the island is in the republic so people should stop calling it southern ireland.

A part of the province of Ulster is still part of the united kingdom but it is not part of britain as people always wrongly imply. Many people also make the mistake of implying that the whole of Ulster is part of the UK, although they dont realise that cavan, monaghan and donegal are all in the province of Ulster. The sectarian division of the country by the british was not only a division of a country but the division of a province within a country

the island of ireland and all the small island are one country. although only 26 out of 32 counties have freedom. for over 800 years there has always been a part of ireland that has been occuppied. the formation of the republic and northern ireland was just the begginings of the whole country eventually having freedom from the british. Just because a foreign government rules doesnt stop you being a country

We are now called Eire and have being self governing since Dec 1922

As the name suggests southern is joined to northern. NorthernI reland is British so yes its still bound to the Uk. People in Southern Ireland like to proclaim they are Irish but really they are British. Most have dual nationality and live in London. You see Ireland was originaly all British until a few IRA terrorists forced a separation. Hopefully soon now that the IRA have been defeated southern Ireland can rejoin its brothers up north again in a all British country. A referendum last year suggested 90% would vote this way. ( Irish Daily May 20Th. Views of voters .)
