Is the Irish Education system out of date? |
Why/Why not? |

No. It's an excellent education system. Because it is broad - most people take 6 or more subjects in the Leaving Cert - it leaves our young people with a much greater choice at third level. Other educational systems which have fewer subjects, lead to much narrower choices. No, it is not out of date. |

I though it was up dated about eight years ago.
In primary schools they encourage children to speak Gaeilge more. Junior cert it is worth 50 % for the listening aspect. To be honest with you I see a big difference. Like, the kids seem to speak the language more in comparison to my time in school. It is still considered a hard subject do and still disliked.

This was a big overhaul in the primary school system.
The junior and Leaving Cert curriculum was changed about eight years ago.
It really has advantaged a person with creative writing skills.
They should apply the more oral aspect of syllabus in class, in Gaeilge do.
In my time the curriculum was good but they were teaching the old way.
That was when it first came in.
I do not know if they are still doing this.
To be honest with you, I do not have the best grammar and spellings in the world, nor am I good at languages.
I would still be very creative with a good memory non-the less.
I also can read really fast.
On the day of my Leaving Cert I was learning a list of my most over spelled, spelling mistakes?
It was great that I did not have to be worried about being penalized for being creative.
I found the syllabus easy as pie.
I spent most of my study time improving my grammar and spellings.
The new paper really suited me. It gives you more creative licence.
I got C1 in Honours, not bad for a person who still has to think
before they write does or those. I did not get exemption for my spellings.
Saying that, there are some great exemptions for people who have very bad spellings in Ireland.
They can get a reader. In the Leaving and Junior Cert bad spellings are taken into account by the examiner. The Examiner is informed about their learning
Difficulty.
In some countries people with bad dyslexia would never be able to read or write, not to mind sit and pass a state exam.
This system continues to collage. People get extra time to sit exam papers, a scribe if they are very bad at English. Some collages give them a loan of a laptop for the collage term, free collage printing, counselling if needed and their lectures are notified of their spellings and it taken into account.
I think Ireland does great remedial work. Some people who go to remedial
in school get a B in a pass paper in maths. It is a great system.
I know there were issues (are still issues) about people with bad disabilities and education. But where I am from they have good facilities. It depends on where you live in Ireland I suppose.
Science was updated in last number of years. It was suppose to be very difficult before that.
You have three options in the leaving cert. Regular leaving cert, LCA and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. I do not know much about the last one. But I know leaving cert applied is good. I knew a person who became nurse from it. It is great for a person who is not very book smart. It is also good for a person who may be very physically sick. They might miss too many days if they did a regular Leaving Cert.
This gives them another option to do a Leaving Cert if they are sick.
You can also go to collage from LCA via the ladder system too.
I do think that there is a lot of emphasis on learning in some subjects here.
You could do really well in your leaving cert and not be very intelligent.
You may just have a good memory, but not be able to apply the knowledge you learn.
They have a syllabus for religion in 2nd level, an exam and all. It is about time too. Like, before that, what you learned would depended on your teacher. One teacher was great and we looked forward to going to his class. They use to talk about modern issues. There was this young female teacher too that was very good. Another teacher had us reading the bible during the whole class. She would be giving out to us because we would be asking her what page she was on in the Bible. I suppose people did this to wind her up. She wouldn’t tell us what page she was on. It only takes 10 min to learn how to use any type of index. She was a bit serious for my liking and said we were horrible, horrible people. At least kids are not doing this in class now. You need to do a bit of everything in Religion, not just the Bible.
A lot of syllabuses have changed, I think for the better.
There are lots of faults in the overall system still, but I am sure some other posters will point them all out.
It is not outdated in my opinion do. |

Yes our education system was the best in europe 10/15yrs ago,but according to EU reports we are now somewhere near the bottom now. due in part to government plans which mean if people pay for education why bother with public service this applies to health service as well.
Also due in part to staff practise's,eg bad teachers cant be sacked. |

Well i'm 16 and in TY at the moment and loving itt!!!
But i don't think the education system here is that bad!
I don't agree with the english or irish curriculum but the rest is ok. I think irish needs to be taught as a SpokeN language instead of learning all this filiocht and the like.
Neither do i think i benefitted from anything i learned in JC English last year. I just don't see how learning the Merchant of Venice or answering questions like 'does this poem affect you'' will help me in later life.
The new revised syllabus for science is really good for people who find it hard to learn things off but makes it harder for people like me then who don't have problems with this getting top marks.
Anyways apart from the above i do think our system is pretty decent, i mean it coud be a lot worse! |

I don't think so. It is however extremely flawed. I think the Irish education is a joke, honestly, you'd think we'd be fluent after 14 years but anyway. I would appreciate it if we could study Irish authors in english class- 'The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time' is probably the worst book ever written give me 'Amongst Women' anytime. And the Math course is way too varied with a lot of pointless learning that we will never use in any future career.
I don't know if this classifies it as out of date, but you might appreciate the rant. |
