There is no "Mafia", but there is organized crime that does in Ireland what the Mafia do elsewhere.
Most of the organized crime in Ireland is run by former paramilitary groups. Some are Irish resistance fighters set up to fight the British and to separate northern Ireland from the UK, other's are Unionist resistance fighters set up to fight to keep Northern Ireland part of the UK. They are largely split along sectarian/religious lines.
Both sides began as armed paramilitaries and they got into organized crime in order to finance themselves and to get money for buying weapons. When the "troubles" (as they are called in Ireland) became a thing of the past most of the paramilitaries disarmed or dissolved and joined with the peace process, but some of them didn't want to give up the power and money that they got from the organized crime and they became criminal gangs.
The run gun and drug smuggling rings and the extortion rackets, pretty much like the Mafia/mob do elsewhere. They also specialize in "punishment beatings", which is a nice way of saying that if somebody crosses them or somebody close to them then that person gets their kneecaps or ankles introduced to some serious pain. |

Yes but I really don't know much about it.
There is organized crime. Also, lots of gangs specifically in Dublin. Lots of teens in them. Some towns can be quite violent..Limerick used to be pretty bad according to my father.
I don't think it is that bad though.
There are gangs and mobs in every country basically. |
|

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

There is.
There's the Dublin 4 Mafia in the East, and there's the Gaelgoir Mafia in the West. |
