No you do not.
There used to be border checkpoints but not anymore.
Only instance you would need a passport is when you are entering either the uk or ireland via airport or port.

Top Contributor is wrong! You don't need any form of ID whatsoever. I'm from the Republic of Ireland you can pass freely from the North and South without any form of ID. Change your money from Euro to Sterling though!

Orla C
There is no such place as Southern Ireland.

There is a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, but it isn't manned anymore - however this may change again. For the time being, just bring photo ID, and you should be alright.

You will hardly know you have crossed the border because there are no checkpoints. You will notice the better roads, though!! They are on the NI side. If you are driving, you are supposed to have your licence with you. That is sufficient. You probably won't even be asked for it, though.

no and no

There is an open border, if you are a non EU citizen and in the unlikely event you are stopped after crossing the border you may get a bit of a telling off but not much else. There is free access across for all EU citizens under the Schengen agreement.

there is a border, though you wouldnt really notice it except for a loada petrol stations and money exchange places, probly a good idea to carry ID as there are sometimes stopchecks by the Garda/PSNI

greenorlagh
Yes there is a border - but it isn't a physical one. You'll only see it on the maps. And no you don't need a passport. You wont even know that you've crossed over!!

You need to carry some form of ID & if you're not a British or Irish citizen, yes you will need your passport and a visa if you require one - it doesn't matter if you're crossing by land, ignorance is not considered a defence if you're caught.

No.There is no border anymore. The police used to stop people years ago but there is no longer any stops. You can still see the old checkpoints from years ago.
Nowadays you can hop into your car and drive straight over it.Everyone is doing it lately during the recession.Petrol and diesel are cheaper in the south where food is cheaper in the north.
Dont forget to change currency if you plan to go shopping!!!!!

bonzodog0
There is no border controls on the roads between the North and south anymore, as the controls for the south are implemented in belfast at the ports and airports.
