Is there fraternities or sororities in Irish colleges?

Don't accuse me of being Americanised! But is there anything like that in Irish colleges, where lots of female or male students live in a big house on campus, or is it just one of those American things?

The colleges with bigger campuses (UL, UCD) do have on-campus accommodation which are basically organised like any other apartment block facility, with extra security and occasionally facist reception staff. These sometimes host block parties, but it depends on the occupants. You are as likely to be living with a tee-totaller religious nut as a drink-fuelled rugger-bugger. I tried it once for a semester because I was on crutches and got stuck with an extremely rich medical student from Singapore who had chronic diarrhea for 5 months (she called an ambulance once because she had trapped wind) and a very posh D4 girl who was a member of Opus Dei and whose ambition was to get married as soon as she finished her MSc and have as many children as God intended. That was a fun-filled 6 months, I can tell you. Choose your housemates if you can at all. Resort to bribery if necessary.

The sorority/fraternity thing doesn't happen. Cliquey clubs are your best bet if you're looking for that sort of pretentiousness. Or become a Student Union officer.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

There is to be sure.
Rodge was a member of the Delta Beta Gamma Omega Fraternity House at Letterkenny RTC.
He got thrown out because he broke into the Epsilon Zeta Omicron Sorority House and was caught.
He also failed to down a keg of beer in 10 seconds. ;-)

Viva La Eire!
N, we dont have them here.

But yer man above me is wrong, plenty of people move away from home to go to college. I know loads of people that moved to carlow and loads of other places for college.

In a word - no. It's an American thing.

Irish universities and colleges do have societies and clubs, like a debating society/club, drama, music, etc.

No, sorry that's just America.
Sure people will share a campus apartment, but only in small groups and apartments aren't a set gender either.

Leaine Ni Loingsigh
I've never heard of one!!

he he. Guaranteed Irish, you made me laugh, a typical Irish expression, "we don't buy into that bull"...Brilliant, you set the tone for my day!

No, sorry no fraternities or anything llike that, a few blonde brigades, tatoo brigades, and nerd brigades, thats it my friend.

Lord, I hope not. That whole system is just evil.
