Is tipping a regular thing in Ireland? |
I plan on living in Ireland for a few months next year and hope to find a job in the serving industry. In the US tipping is a big thing and servers make a lot of money off of tips, I was wondering if it was equivalent in Ireland. |

No. The pay structure for the job is different. The hourly wage is much higher so you won't need to rely on tips as heavily.
When I am visiting Ireland I still do tip a little unless the service has been bad; when staying there for an extended time generally I don't tip except on food as that is the norm. I leave a euro or two, I do not leave what in the US would be a standard tip.I guess one would tip on taxis too; I don't generally take them. When in Rome do as the Romans do = follow the local customs. Just as a European visitor to the US should tip as that is the US custom/norm and the tip should be factored into the cost of the meal.
Edit - a standard tip in the US is 15%-20% on the meal and generally $1 on a drink at a bar. It is considered extremely rude and poor manners to not tip or to severely under tip in the US if one knows about the US custom. Tipping originated in Europe but is now considered American. It's just a different way of doing things, it isn't wrong or bizarre any more than any other cultural difference is.
American tourists are often admonished to emulate and respect European customs when traveling. Yet, we often don't see respect for our own customs. Wonder why the double standard. |

no, tipping does not make up part of your wages. Most people are paid by the hour, so if you work 8 hours, you get 8 hours pay, regardless of how many customers you have.
People do tip, in restaurants, taxi's and hairdressers, but not in bars. And the amount of tip given is discretionary, nothing to do with percentages.
I think it's only the US that uses that system, to me it seems bizarre, but it's a different culture I suppose. |

no! no tipping here im afraid, which is just as well considering the price of everything last thing we need is having to pay tips aswell!
i have never understood tips? they always seemed a bit stupid to me! if someone gets a job in a bar or restaurant there paid by there employer from the money spent by the customers, so why should customers have to pay them again??
anyway no tips but youll get paid like €8 or €9.50 for every hour!
some people might leave a small tip, also depends on how fancy the place is! |

I should be doing something else

No, tipping is not a big thing here (or pretty much anywhere else in the world) like it is in the USA
If waiting staff do get a tip, it is generally just a couple of Euro, regardless of how much the bill came to.
I understand that in the USA it is customary to tip 25-30% of the bill (sometimes more) but that would never happen here.
The only time I ever tip is for restaurant staff and the hairdresser, each time, I only tip £1 (I live in Northern Ireland) |

Most of the time people in Ireland are paid a proper wage, according to EU legislation. Tipping is nice, but not obligatory.
Jobs here are scarce at the moment, so I wouldn't bank on getting work. And if you are a US citizen, you will find that it's much harder to get work. |

No, not like it is in the USA...
Some people do tip, but the way I see it is, waiting staff are paid the same rate as a cashier in a shop. You don't tip cashiers, so why tip waiting staff.
I have seen people under the ettiquette section in yahoo answers who are waitinf staff in the USA saying that if they did not get a good tip they would give bad service next time. lovey attitude!!! |

Oh some people say no. But I think this is so rude. If somebody gives you nice food then give them a huge tip.
But not too much. You do not want them to insult them.
It is only fair. Good food is hard to come across these days. |
