Kilt for a wedding? |
I'm going to a wedding in Galway (from Los Angeles) in a couple weeks and the groom wants us to wear kilts. The groom and best man will be wearing the grooms family tartan. Being from the States, a few of us only have plain black "Utilikilts" that do look great with a shirt, tie and black jacket. Would this be appropriate? |

I am from galway. There is no real irish tradition for wearing kilts, we broke away from that tradition, unlike our celtic cousins in scotland, when we discovered trousers. Kilts are worn by the more traditional male irish dancer, there are no tartan patterns on irish kilts,. I have never seen a family tartan on an Irish kilt, the only tradition would be people of scottish ancestory in northern ireland, and they dont consider themselves irish. The fact of the matter is most people in galway will think your scottish, we have many stag parties from scotland so a kilt is not uncommon in Galway.
Traditional wedding attire in ireland and galway is a morning suit, Cravat or tie, Tails are optional.
I wish your friend the best of luck with his wedding he is sure to have a great time in Galway. It is also the home of the Claddagh Ring, it is a traditional Irish ring which can tell you if the wearer is single or married based on the orientation of the ring on the finger.
(there are no family tartans only county,) If your name is cambell or macdonald the reason you have a tartan is because they are scottish names.
Most people assign the tartan of their county. Galway would be maroon and white, |

I'd email him and ask if there is a certain kilt you can wear??
If your family history dates back to a certain clan you may be able to google and find a maker.
Perhaps you can pick one up when you arrive??
I think either way you'd look great.....men in dress kilts always look good.....the I think the real question is what are you going to wear under the kilt?? |

What deburca says is only partially true. While we have definitely lost the tradition of wearing Kilts in Ireland-Irish families do, in general have a tartan. Even you don't have a Celtic name I say just pick out one you like-they won't be easy to find in Ireland though-so try and buy one before you come! |
