Celtic Tigress (Donegal!)

Living and working between the Border: "Border hoppers"?

I live in the very north of Co. Donegal, and I constantly cross the border to Derry, almost every day of the week.

I'm currently working in Muff (great name I know) If you were to draw a line to show the border between Donegal and derry, it would literally run straight through Muff, and probably cut the building where I work in half.

I work in a Vet's as a Nurse, we take people from both sides of the border, although most are from Derry. I see a lot of people, from all over the Republic and NI. I work with all NI people, all Protestants (myself being a Catholic) and we all get on the very best. I Absolutely love them, we all have such a laugh together! I have never been made to feel anything but welcome and loved, even though i'm the minority.

It makes me happy to see how well everyone in our clinic gels, customers and staff: regardless of what your address is or what religion you are. We all just get on with life.

But seeing on the news the RIRA killing again, it makes me sad to see so much hate. I wish they could see how we all get along at my work; why can't they let us all live in peace? let by-gones be by-gones?

I was wondering what is it like for other "Border Hoppers" like myself??

Why would you not belive me??? Whatever you think yourself buddy....but I'm afraid I can't be held resposible for inventing the town of Muff from my imagination. You have issues.

I believed this until you spoilt the whole story with the name of the town you are working in.

Dark Blue, have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muff,_County_Donegal

I'm glad to hear these kind of comments from someone it effects directly, there have been some keyboard warriors lately making broad brush comments, mostly having never even been to Eire or N.Ireland.and were only going by the media coverage.

EDIT :
Hi back James G, Greetings from Wales/Chile

I'd love to lick an ice cream in Muff

....that really sounds wrong!

I believe you completely. It's only the tunnel-visioned extremists that can't get past the whole 1690 thing, and they are not limited to any one side.

I work in Derry too - and know Muff very well. It's where I buy my deisel. There's no problem with the people I work with and I'm working a people who would consider themselves Nationalists - I am from the other 'side' - I have NEVER had a problem and like you have had loads of fun with work colleagues.

I think that we have to remember that the current small run of terrorism isn't aimed at Catholic/Protestant relations but some sort of crazy freedom fighter gig where a belief in killing innocent people is going to achieve something.

Why When How
Why the hate you ask. Some people choose a snippet of history and use it to form an opinion of why they hate the British or Irish. History is never black and white and most people get it wrong.(e.g. England never invaded Ireland in 1169 they were invited by the King of Leinster and haalf the advance party were Welsh not English)

Some people choose to live in the past rather than visit it .Our history must always be remembered but if we are to move forward we must learn from it and be sensible.

Some people are very adament they are Irish or British, it's possible to be both. If you think about it our lives are very American/Australian/English/Irish as we live in a global world.

fully agree lass. i am the progeny of "one of each". i love to laugh and think everyone and everythings great. love life's my motto.

and it pains me to see you and the other contributors to Y!A hurting so. i am old enough to have seen it all and am a founder member of the 1993 peace initiative. alls i want is to see my teenage daughter laugh. she's a bit nervy at the moment. we're 6 miles from the border.

but lifes like that. stand proud and strong, loving and patient. peace will come. i can feel it. till then hi to all in Muff (been there, had ice cream).

your next dilemna of course is which of the previous 2 answerers to give 10pts to. 5 each would be fairer eh?

hi AI G and Orla C

(blue - visit Muff and have an ice cream)

Peace in

Misty Blue
I border hopped today actually.Of course there's a Muff!

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

Rodge and I are members of the Muff diving club. We have great fun altogether.
It's time they brought back internment and threw the small number of idiots in the 'real' IRA into an internment camp and left them to rot.
The police know who they are.

I'm not a Border Hopper, but I'd like to say that I agree with you completely.
I was in Londonderry last month, and I couldn't believe it was the place I heard so much about, the foyleside centre and new apartments, along with the Walls and heritage make Londonderry my favourite city in Britain i'd say.
After spending a week in Northern Ireland I was proud for the first time to tell people I was half Northern-Irish, and the News really made me upset.
Please, please, please don't decend into chaos again,
fight against these criminals.
Catholic, Protestant, Irish, British, Loyalist, Nationalist, Unionist, Republican, Hindu, Alien, it doesn't matter

One thing i would hate about Border Crossing would be Mobile Phone Signal ;/
Even in Portrush I was being connected to Irish networks even though I was about 30 miles from Ireland, I couldn't deal with my phone bill xD
