Means testing child benefit? |
What do you think? They're getting rid of the ECS, which is manageable, but child benefit? I rely on my child benefit to help towards electricity, oil and petrol. Though I suppose those are going down in costs, but I bet not enough for how strictly they means test. |

Well as a mother of two children i know what you mean. But i think the child benefit should be means tested like i dont think its fair that people with plenty of money are getting child benefit, i reckon people on social welfare and low income should be the only ones getting it. I know of people who have forgot yes FORGOT to collect their child benefit like come on its obvious they dont need it then, im always waiting on it to pay bills. As for the ECS i suspoze it will be managable as we only started getting it monthly this year but still its annoying that they brought it in then just get rid of it. Ive got 2 children under 5 so from next month ill only be getting 92euro well i suspoze its better than nothing. but sure theirs nothing we can do about it now |

I'm not sure how they are going to means test child benefit. If it is regarded as income at the end of the year for tax purposes, that seems equitable. Those with least income won't have much need to worry. Up to now, it wasn't taxed, and for the very wealthy, who didn't need it, it was therefore a tax-free handout.
One free Mayo weekly newspaper today described the 7 Mayo politicians as "millionaires one and all, thanks to the taxpayers' generosity", and printed a chart showing the income and expenses claimed by each for 2008. The lowest total for one person was €120,940.80. The highest was €182.968.58. This works out at roughly €331 and €501 per day, 365 days of the year. Do these people need a child benefit supplement as well?
I'd be interested in seeing if they will retain their special tax "privilege", or if they will now have to pay income tax as set out, just like the rest of us. |

I rely on my child benefit for my mortgage. If I don't get that, I will be one of those who begins to renage on my mortgage payments, and will loose my home, my home that my son and I live in. All the rich politicians etc, do they really need the childrens allowance?? Or fancy hot shots? No they can afford to loose out on 166 per month, we, the normal people cant |

We all have to take our share of the hit, including you. And believe me, im definitely taking a hit too! We all have to share the responsibility whether we like it or not, its the only way out of this hole. |

Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥

Well the cut off for means testing the medical card for over 75s is 700 Euro per week for a single person and 1400 per week for a couple. So as long as the means testing is along the same lines for child benefit the majority of us will still receive it.
If you have 1400 Euro a week coming in you really don't "need" child benefit the way someone on 620 Euro a week (my family) needs it. |

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

The publicans will definitely miss it.
Sher the night the child benefit comes out the pubs are only packed to the gills with women. |
