Mobile phones - Aus to Ireland?

My partner is going to Ireland next week (we live in australia) and I am wondering if anyone knows if his phone will work over there and if we'll be able to contact each other? What do we need to do? He has a Nokia N95 and is with Optus. Also, do they have different electrical points? Will he be able to charge his phone there? Thank you.

Hey there,

Yes he can use his phone over here, according to the optus website, If its a prepaid phone check out:

http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=Template_woRHS&FP=/personal/mobile/usingyourmobileoverseas/prepaidautoroam&site=personal

If its a bill phone, check out:

http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=Template_woRHS&FP=/personal/mobile/usingyourmobileoverseas/prepaidautoroam&site=personal

Ireland is in zone 4 of optus's tarrif rates. Depending on what time frame he's going to be over here, it could be cheaper to purchase an irish mobile, you can purchase one from E49.00 and theres usually a small amount of call credit preloaded onto the phone. From wat ive checked out Meteor seem to have the best international call prices 50c per min to Australia (thats really good) Only go with meteor if he's going to be mostly located in a city or large town as sometimes it doesnt get a great signal in the countryside, anyway check out the following websites for more info:

Oh, If he does bring his australian phone, then yes he'll need to bring an adaptor, we use the same voltage as The U.K (3 pin plug), he can pick up an adaptor at the airport.

Hope this helps

we have a three point plug system so he will need a three PINadapter for the sockets here.if he is bill phone though he shouldn't have much trouble phoning home once he has a triband phone and roaming on his phone.

I was able to use my Nokia in Australia. Depending on where I was, sometimes I had Optus and sometimes Telstra. At home I use O2. I got an adaptor at the airport and had no problem chargiing my phone as the voltage is the same here and there. For your partner, I have no doubt it will be the same situation in reverse. Get him to text you. Spoken phone calls cost the earth - for him and also for you - it is charged to both people.

Irish networks have roaming agreements with all operators. Go to websites above and also www.gsmworld.com for a broader view about roaming.
But.... I strongly advise, depending on how long the person is staying, to buy a local sim card, and avoid roaming charges.
