Moving to Ireland?

Hi,

I am going to be moving to Dublin in September to Study. I am from London in England.

Just was wondering about any rivalry between Ireland and England. Do you think that I will have any trouble fitting in? Do you think i will face any problems as i am English?

Thanks

More Irish people live in England then any where else because it's cheaper & easier to get to then the other countries. People stay here because they make lives for themselves or have no choice and as for getting on doing what they want to do without interference, it's worse then being at home sometimes.

Put the preconceptions out of your head about how you'll be received, going in nervous or on the defensive is the absolutely worst way to go about things. Irish people are for the most part polite to strangers, chances are you will meet the odd plonker but ignore them & move on.

No, don't be silly, there are thousands of English people in Dublin you will be fine, but like any major city, there is always the element of un-savoury characters, so be careful as you would be anywhere else.

I dont know where olga is getting here facts from but the largest ethnic group above the polish, that is coming here to live(republic of ireland) and work is the English, i guess they must find england not as tolerant as it used to be.
The simple fact is that the reason there are more irish people living abroad is because of emmigration, nothing to do with tolerance,
Any race of people that had to live next door to GB would have to be tolerant

?
I'm Irish with an English accent as I live over here... And when I go over there, which is quite often, I never have a problem. You probably will get a little criticism but nothing you can't handle. In fact, some of them will be interested in someone different - and i mean interested in a good way, not a bad way. Good luck.

Puzzledirishgirl
Not at all. You will always get some idiot saying something but most Irish people don't care. I know a few English people and they don't have any problems. I would like to think most people are over all of that. There is loads of English (and other nationalities) here so its getting easier.... If you are coming to study you will meet people that way which is a good way. All in all you wont have a problem, come and enjoy!

Not a problem. Dublin is the most English city of Ireland, so they probably won't even notice your accent.

Come west and see the real Ireland while you're here, though. Worth checking out!

Irish people love the English, but we hate the Brits.

This is a common enough saying, it basically means we have a lot of time for the common English man.

look at history, english working class workers have helped out the irish in the past...just look at the 1913 lockout.

i am a born and bred cockney with Irish parents, as soon as i open my mouth people think i should be on Easterners ha ha. i came to live in Ireland 6 years ago and have never had any trouble whatsoever although i have an Irish background the people in Ireland do not know this and think i am pure English either way it is definitely not a problem, Ireland and the Irish are forward thinking and tolerant and i don't think you will have any trouble whatsoever.

n.barrett93
there'll be a bit of banter but nothing serious at all. although don't expext many people to be supporting england in sporting matches............................

that's pretty much the extent of it - irish people support anyone other than england in soprts matches.no problems with the people

My parents are both fully irish. My dad is from Belfast and my mum is from Dublin. I was born in England and lived here my whole live and I have an english accent. Every time we go to visit our relatives in both the north and south of ireland they are always happy to see us (of course) but then also my cousins friends and my families friends are always like 'I love their accent' 'OMG your from England thats soo cool' and always very nice to us! But our family do have a friendly joke where we say England is better than Ireland and my parents and the rest of our family say Ireland is better, but we always joke about it. I am 22 and I have never really had anyone say anything mean or nasty to me because I am english!
Hope i helped!
x

No, I really don't think so. There are a lot of English people living in Ireland. They might make fun of you in a nice way, but that's what happens to all of us immigrants!

No problem now . It would have been dangerous ten years ago but after the elimination of the IRA terrorists and acceptance by theDublin government that N.Ireland is truly British the anti British sentiment has largely died away. Of course there are a few extremists still crawling around but they are few now.

Despite their protestations, the Irish like the Glaswegians are not a tolerant people. If you can behave and do as they do, fine, but if you would like to be just yourself you'll soon find not just offence, but aggression. This is why more Irish live in England than in the whole of Ireland...they're allowed to be themselves without interference...as the English are a very tolerant people, from running a huge Empire. If you're prepared to tread on egg-shells you can survive in Dublin, but if you want to develop as yourself, and allow your individuality to blossom study in London. OLGA
