Moving to Ireland from Canada?

I would love to move to Ireland, I am currently in Canada. My ancestors are Irish, I believe my great grandparents were Irish citizens.

I would only need a call center job or something. I heard Ireland is in need of workers right now, is this true? How would one go about getting a work VISA? How much money should I save up before going there?

Never done anything like this, just curious!!

Hi, there is definitely not a skills shortage right now save in a small number of specialist areas. Unemployment is expected to reach over 7% this month, the highest in about 15 years. Call centre jobs are considered to be low-level white-collar jobs, so you won't get a visa on the basis of one of those jobs. Do you have any specialist skills? Also, research your family tree a bit more. If just one of your grandparents was born in Ireland you'll be entitled to an Irish passport and then you won't have to worry about a visa or work permit (you can have both an Irish and a Canadian passport). Contact your closest Irish embassy, they'll send you out an information pack of everything you need to know about the various different visa etc.

If you're from Vancouver (or anywhere in BC or Alberta) I might consider doing a straight house swap with you. You can have my house, my job, my passport but you'd have to agree to tend my army of ducks as well. I'll water your plants and be you in return. Deal?

Ireland is in need of workers right now? Who told you that?
Sher the only one who's saying that is Micheal Martin and sher everybody knows he's living in cloud cuckoo land.

But sher you should come anyway. We love Canadians.
They're like Americans but without the showiness!

if you're under 35yrs old you can get a 1 year working holiday visa. Have a look at www.swap.ca for details
Also yeah the economy isn't as good as it was, but you say youre happy to do something like call centre..i really dont think youd have much trouble with that, particularly if you have good IT skills. Probably pick up some office work too. Im basing this on if you were to move to dublin...might be harder in other areas of Ireland. Dublin is where most jobs are. It's also most expensive, so you'd prob have to share a house/flat as it would be hard to afford alone.
Other big cities are Galway and Cork...galway is nice, its on the west coast. Im not sure about jobs tho...but both those places are cheaper than dublin. Wages in dublin do tend to be a bit higher tho to compensate for this.
For jobs, look at www.irishjobs.ie, www.recruitireland.com and monster.ie

this is probably one of the worst times to move internationally, the ero is worth way more than the Canadian dollar, there is such a major job shortage i know so many people who have move to London to find a job. also homes a re super expensive. DON"T DO IT!

ireland is in need of some workers, but depends were you go.
it is a bit of a bad time to be traveling becasue of the prices of everything has gone up world wide
im 2nd generation irish, and 1st generation english, so i know that it affects both counties quite well.

if you have a job in construction, its a bad idea. my cousin is a painter and decorator (large familly trade), and he immegrated to germany for work.

but as canadian dolloars are sorta the same to american dollars, and £sterling is half, i would say you need alot of money.
and a visa might help.
if your 2nd generation irish, your entitled to irish citizenship and a n irish passport, like me. but anythin past that you get less and less eligable.

i hope i helped

At the moment, this global downturn has hit everyone, including us in Ireland, so I would hold off this idea for a while.

But if you want to browse jobs, there are plenty of websites: www.recruitireland.ie being just one.

If you can find a birth cert or something to prove your grandparents were Irish, you might be able to swing Irish citizenship, which would eliminate the whole visa thing.
