Before you consider the costs of living in the Republic, you need to consider how you're going to legally live & work here.

There are exception circumstances in which some with a great-grandparent can claim citizenship but your parents birth had to have been registered with the Irish Embassy & so did yours.

The other option is citizenship through naturalisation which means you would need to, legally, live in the Republic of Ireland for a minimum of 4 years. In order to live & work in the Republic of Ireland you need to acquire a visa, you can apply to the Irish Embassy in the US for details but they are increasingly putting restrictions on who can & cannot work in Ireland.

The other option, which someone else has suggested, is if you have a parent who is a citizen of an EU member then you should see if you're eligible for citizenship/passport of that country. A passport from an EU member state would allow you to travel freely through Europe & settle where you wish - although having said that, there are restrictions on some Eastern European countries such as Romania & Bulgaria.

If you want to know what the country is like, go to your local library or a big book store & borrow/buy a guidebook, it'll cover all the major towns, tell you what the transportation system is like, etc. You may even be able to find a book about living & working in the Republic of Ireland. Or just come over here on holiday & have a look around for yourself.

Gonzo M
not to be rude or anything but i'd advise you to stay away from ireland
in this whole recession people are grumpy, and unsociable at the moment, only the rich snobs can afford to maintain a social life, completely killing the best thing in ireland, the social life
also the chances of getting a job for an unemployed irish person are slim, and the chances of an immigrant getting a job are even worse.
Having family ties in ireland is nice, but in my opinion, it isn't worth the hassle, as if you're from outside europe you'll need to get a visa.
so, sorry to put a dim look on things, but ireland is bad, maybe wait a few years til the economy kicks off again, but for the moment, i'd advise you to stay away

Woof! Woof! said the Dog
Blame our Government and the worldwide recession for it but what Gonzo M said is the truth at the moment I'm afraid...

im pretty sure it has to be ur parents or grandparents to get citizenship and it stops there, sorry
