My wife is from Ireland and we are thinking about moving there. Will I be able to work straight away?

Is it true that it takes three years of living there to obtain citizenship? I love it there, and would like to insure citizenship or residency so that I can return to the states to see my family and move freely through Europe. Thanks.
Additional Details
The crazy thing is that my dad is German, but because my parents never married, under German immigration law, I can't acquire citizenship from there!

I'm afraid it is true. This from the Crosscare Migrant Project:

Citizenship through Marriage:
If you are a returning Irish migrant and you are married to a non-EU national, your spouse may be eligible to reside here legally. Up to 29 November 2005 it was possible to become an Irish citizen by making a post-nuptial declaration but this scheme has ended. If your spouse wants to apply for Irish citizenship, then they must firstly acquire residency in Ireland. After 3 years of marriage and residency in Ireland, you are entitled to apply to become an Irish citizen. To be eligible for Irish citizenship your marriage must be recognised as valid under Irish law.

To apply for residency in Ireland based on your marriage to an Irish citizen, you must apply to Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform for “residency based on being the spouse of an Irish national”. Your Irish spouse must prove that he/she can provide for you financially while you are awaiting the outcome of your residency application. For more information contact Crosscare Migrant Project or the Department of Justice. If you are currently living abroad, you should contact your nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate.

You will not be allowed to work straight away, and if they are being mean, possibly never. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment can give you information on how to apply for a work permit. If you are a skilled worker, this process is much easier.

Get in contact with your local Irish embassy (link below). They should be able to give you further information on how to secure residency etc.

Many people in the states that i have talked to do not know what the EU european union is. When we talk about europe we dont mean the continent, the EU is a collection of 25 member states which includes ireland. Members of the EU are free to travel through out member states as well as live workand vote in local elections. citizenship in member states is a matter for the country in question.

You will probably be able to work straight away - as long as it's a McDonald's job or something like that.
There's no jobs here at the moment at all at all....

Its is not true that it takes 3 years to get citizenship...If you want Irish citizenship you get EU citizenship...that means you receive citizenship for a number of Europeans country. How long it takes is another matter, it helps if your country is on good terms with the EU, that you have a current passport from your country, and if you have a direct blood link to someone who is already living there, also having a Irish wife helps you!
