PEOPLE OF IRELAND! This house could arm the Gardaí?

This house could arm the Gardaí?
In other words, do you think the irish police force should carry guns, or not? Give reason, if time is not an issue.
Much thanks!

Phoenix
course they should cos the scumbags have no fear of an unarmed garda

Misty Blue
Nope ,slippery slope. The longer we can keep it so that guns are not seen as normal in this society the better. The penalty for having guns in a burglary or any crime should be extremely severe to deter criminals from taking up arms also.

froggequene
No, arming the police would up the ante, criminals are already armed but it would be more or less giving them a licence to shoot back to 'defend' themselves.

If you looked at the responses of the specialist armed units in the UK, even they make mistakes - how many mistakes would an ordinary garda make? And given the infinite capacity of the Gardai to metaphorically shoot themselves in the foot, do we really want to give them the physical capacity to do it as well? Perhaps we could ask Prawo Jazdy for his opinion as well

Éirerua
No, because in my opinion two wrongs don't don't make a right. And the Gardi need to hold themselves in higher regard then the scum that's out there.

Get an non Irish opinion, for someone who has lived in a country where the police carry guns....

Just 2 months ago in Greece a teenager has been shot dead by the police, leading the country to massive riots organized by the indymedia and far left parties. Angry gangs smashed down stores and burn cars in the major cities angry gangs stole everything from the stores and some gun stores have been wrecked, while illegal immigrants got all those guns. Just 2 weeks before a far right skinhead dropped a petrol bomb to an immigration house giving the spark for other riots and the saying goes on... leading us to the outcome that VIOLENCE BRINGS VIOLENCE. I bet the same happens to all the other countries with armed police. Just get a lesson from the Greek example. I sometimes feel more scared from a violent police rather than a junkie...

I don't know what the people from Ireland have to say, but me who have lived in other countries where the cops carry guns I say DON'T DO IT. Sure an armed police would be a disaster as the policemen have so much power sometimes. Maybe more police could sort it out, occasionally armed. Apart from that they can't use them. If they shot back and kill the scumbag they go to prison as criminals....

I am sure the majority of the Irish ppl want the police to remain unarmed.

They probably will be armed at some stage in the future but the real problem is the 'revolving door' system in the Courts. When someone is jailed they should stay in jail for all that time and not be let out in a few years time. There is too much legislation and it is not being enforced. If the Courts and judges were held more to account and the DPP, when someone was convicted and sent to prison for 10 years then they should stay in prison for that length of time and yes life should mean life and not 15 to 17 years as it stands now. Also the Guards blame the Courts, the Courts blame the prison authorities and the prison authorities blame the Government for the shortcomings in the legal system. It's just a vicious circle and the criminals are taking advantage of it. Who said civilians were armed up above?

it would seem to make sense, but then we'd have shootings between scobes and guards. as it stands now theres never really been a shootout. there are some dodgy fuckers around but i cant see them shooting an unarmed guard when the sheer presence of a gun will allow them escape. and all the cities now have an armed rapid responce unit that drive around the whole time. i feel thats all thats needed.

pollbee
Guards in Ireland with guns?Ha,there bad enough as it is,god knows what the death toll would be.

fenderbloke
If gards get guns, the bad guys get igger guns. Thats why America went down the drain

A man with a gun or a guard with a baton.. who will win that fight then?

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
Yes of course in this day and age.
If the druggies carry them, the guards should carry them as well.

yes i think its about time the gards come into the real world and are able to fight crime with proper weapons, not a baton and a can of mase!! the gangs out there have high tech guns and equipment how do you compete with that.im amazed that there hasnt been more killings within the force

Tid
Yes, because Templemore will teach them how to use a gun correctly, back alley's with scumbags don't. The Gardai ain't gonna shoot for the crack, only when necessary, scumbags and druggie's don't have the level of intelligence to realise a gun can kill, Gardai do. Yes, they should carry guns.

Gawwwd no.

I would've have been killed about 10 years ago if this were the case.

fiona
definitely.....the public are armed so having unarmed law enforcers is just absolutely ridiculous!!
