People on this are so hypocritical? |
I am Irish. Everytime an American comes on to this and says anything about the Irish drinking everyone attacks them and says the Irish are not heavy drinkers, stop stereotyping blablabla. Yet the other day someone asked a question asking should the pubs be closed on Good Friday and the majority of answers were 'we should be able to drink whenever we want' 'the pubs being closed is a disgrace' etc. HELLO? Everyone is obsessed with drinking but won't admit it!! Additional Details Seriously though I think its scary that some people have to drink every day to have fun... |

I agree. I am sick and tired of everybody drinking too much and taking too much hard-core drugs. I do not upset easily but here is a list of what people have said to me while they were drunk.
You haven’t a sensitive bone in your body.
You are selfish and full of it.
You are the angel of death.
You care for only yourself.
You are sick and need to get help.
You are a fanny tease.
I left out the Darker stuff they said to me.
And I did not deserve any of those horrible things to be said about me.
And none of those statements are true.
It takes a lot to upset me. But I must congratulate the Irish people because they did succeed in upsetting me. I hope ye are Happy now.
I cannot help that I am confident.
So I could not be bothered going out to hear people say this crap about me.
And I love going out.
I agree with you totally on this point.
Edit: You can drink on a train on Good Friday
lol
That is not breaking the "No Pub Rule"
Edit: Lots of people go to the pub and do not drink alcohol.
I do this myself the odd time. |

I asked that question, purely a rhetorical one, and I was getting answers saying if I can't stay out of the pub for ONE day, I have a problem. Which was not what I meant, I probably go out twice a month!!!
But I think everyone is defensive about their own nationality, go on any site, and ask do all Americans like fast food, do all English fight, do all Austrians lock their children up, and I'm sure you will get some abuse, and deservedly so.
The Irish enjoy having a pint, it's part of the culture, but it doesn't mean we are all raging alcoholics, and there are plenty of people who don't drink at all.
And most people who did answer about the pubs being closed, wanted the tradition to remain, the ones who didn't, wanted it changed to coincide with the fall of influence the church has over our nation.
EDIT, I agree with you about people drinking everyday, but to me people who do that aren't doing it to have fun, more likely it's because they have a problem, but that's a global phenomena not exclusive to Ireland. |

im not obsessed with drinking, and i said no to the question about good friday, im irish, rarely drink, and i am very offended by the stereotypes about irish ppl, just like im sure americans are offended by the stereotypes ppl have of them |

I should be doing something else

I don't think it's a case of people having to drink every day to have fun, but the Easter break is a holiday and we are off work, when we have a bit of free time with no work the next day, a lot of people (regardless of whether they are Irish or not) like to take the opportunity to have a night out.
Anyway, we got off Good Friday and Easter Monday (today) and I didn't do anything on either of these days :)
Edit: ayhartlasketchup. Nowhere in the above text did I say or imply that. |

The Good Friday answers were about our freedom. As my brother in law so abley put it on Friday "i have to do without a pint just coz you have imaginary friends" referring to the state legislator dudes i presume, and him a nondrinker!
i dont drink much but as the lads said its a public holiday. if you must ban it for a day pick a tuesday in February when i'm on late shift |

There is a big difference between Ireland having like 5 billion pubs and people being very fond of their pub and then being told ALL Irish people are alcoholics.
Yes we all know we like pubs and drinking and its difficult to meet many Irish people who dont like the occasional drink, we are probably more so like this than loads of other countries,
but generally people no matter what their race dont like being told they are all alcoholics and then being stereotyped, just the same as if someone said all americans are fat or all germans are nazis.
Why is it that 99% of stereotypes are not acceptable but when it somes to Irish people think its ok?
I personally think the pubs shouldnt have been closed on Good Friday not because I myself am a heavy drinker, but because at this day and age religion shouldnt have that strong an influence over our laws and if people were that religious then they themselves should not drink, but other religions shouldnt be affected by it, they should have the choice, afterall nowadays Ireland has got more than one religion. |

I'm not Irish but I live in Ireland now and I must admit a lot of Irish culture is based around drinking alcohol, young girls and lads seem to take great delight in getting pissed every weekend. There is nothingmuch to do in the town where I live except go to the pub (there are about 12 pubs for a population of less than 1000)
To be honest every Irish occasion is accompanied by drink, christenings, weddings, funerals, confirmations, first holy communions etc etc, there is always a "do" after and everyone gets pissed.
Some local (men) are still moaning here that they can't drink and drive any more. They still do though, the hunt park their horse boxes outside the pub for 2 hours when they finish, you telling me they are all drinking lemonade after a hard days riding. Oh yeah!
I have a couple glasses of wine most days to relax and be sociable with my b/f when we have dinner. However we never go to the "pub" too damn expensive. |

Some people drink to socialise not to get plastered but unfortunately Ireland does have a bad attitude towards drink, in that alot of people go out just to get ratfaced, but it does annoy me when people who know nothing about the culture presume that everyone is like that. |

I don't think the Good Friday thing is about being obsessed with drink. It's about shaking the influence of the Catholic church on our laws. At the same time I do think it is pathetic the way some people run out to the offie in a panic. |

As an American, (get ready to give me thumbs down for the place of my birth) I completely agree with you.
It's the same as the "do you all have guns" or the crime questions that you get from Irish/Brits in the US travel section. People stereotype. The Irish are no different. They stereotype others yet chafe at their own national stereotypes. If they dislike being stereotyped, then perhaps they too should stop stereotyping? And that's when the hypocrisy kicks in.
The sad fact is, the Irish along with the Danish are at the very top of excessive alcohol consumption studies in the EU. That isn't a stereotype - it's hard data. Make of it what you will. |
