Planning a trip to Ireland in 2010 or 2011?

I know I want to go to Cork! but other than that the trip is up in the air. I'm looking for any good information you possibly have about the best time of year and good airlines or if there are any hotels that are good or bad. We, my husband and myself, will be traveling with our two young kids & will also be renting a car to travel as much as possible across Ireland.

We are very excited! So any information/advice is greatly appreciated!

Amy D: Thanks, but no. Not going because of some stupid movie. Cork may not be great, but thats where my grandfather is from & my grandmother is from County Mayo. Neither one is with us any more and they always talked of going back to Ireland so this trip is for them in a way and for me and my children.

Rather than hotels, try bed and breakfasts - cheaper and friendlier, especially if you have kids. I would recommend booking through www.familyhomes.ie.

The Irish airlines are www.aerlingus.com and www.ryanair.com - although between now and 2011, anything could happen ....

By all means hire a car, but remember this: Automatic cars are few and far between in Ireland, and will cost you a lot more to rent. The steering wheel is on the right of the vehicle, and you drive on the left of the road. We use roundabouts differently, you give way to traffic coming from the right. And most importantly: for all that Ireland is not a large country, you cannot expect to be able to drive 100 miles in 100 minutes - it's not going to happen. The roads here are not built for large volumes of high-speed traffic. Allow 90 minutes for every 60 miles, and you will get a much better idea of how long it will take you to get from A to B. Even better, decide on an area and stay there for a week, rather than haring all over the country with two small children in the back. I would suggest basing yourselves at a seaside resort like Ballybunion or Kilkee, and making the odd day trip from there.

The website for Ireland is ,discoverireland.ie and it will give you all the info you need.

Use bed and breakfasts - much better and friendlier than hotels and you'll find them everywhere. However if you fancy basing yourself in one area for a week you can rent a home quite cheaply. That gives you a base to return to every night.

Don't forget to travel north and see the Marble Arch Caves, Mourne Mountains, Donegal, Inishowen, Fermanagh and its Lake District - great castle to visit in Enniskillen too that the kids would love.

Travel the Antrim Coast Road then yp to the North Coast, stay in Dungiven at the Castle - its a fantastic place to stay.

beth: you can't go to waterford crystal because the factory and tourist part are closed

Hi,

I have been to Ireland twice. Get out and see the countryside. Also Waterford Crystal is very interesting and the kids willk like it too. There are some bed and breakfast places that are so cool! There is one that is part castle. I only know the eastern side, however, I think the west side is the most beautiful. Have a real Guinnis there.

Are you one of those who's seen too much of P.S I Love You? cause were not like that especially not Cork.
Your best bet is to buy a hotel pass then you can stay in any hostel across Ireland, there is no good airlines in Ireland they'll all rip you off on price, so don't be expecting good deals. The best time of year is the summer time cause theres not as much rain and you get a lot more sunny days and longer days, Make sure you visit Abbey Castle and the Aran Islands, it's a boat trip over from Galway but your kids will love the trip over because you can watch the dolphins jump in and out of the waves after the boat.
