Lots of conflicting advice here. I travel from UK to Dublin five or six times a year. You do not need a passport. But you will need one if you go by air and do on-line check in. If you choose to check in at the desk you will need photo ID and I would recommend Driving License. Ryanair won't accept bus pass, not sure about other airlines. If you go by ferry then you don't need ID, though it would be good idea to have some sort of photo ID. As he does not drive I guess he has no license either so this will limit options. He will have to ring airlines to discuss(Aer Lingus may be more sympathetic-dont bother with Ryanair-sympathy not in their dictionary) or he needs to get train to Holyhead and get ferry to Dublin. |

Yes, British and Irish citizens do not need a passport to travel between Britain and Ireland, but if he is flying the airline will require photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, if he is travelling by ferry he won't need any ID. |

If it ant Boeing I ant going .

Ya he needs his driving licence though .Irish and british citizens can travel freely between the uk and ireland with just a driving licence.......I work for them and they do take driving licence if you are british or irish |

If he's going by ferry he'll be fine.By plane he'll need some kind of I.D like a national Identity card, driving licence etc.If he called in at the passport office something could be arranged,he'll need to take his birth cert and passport pics with him for quickness. |

it depends who he is flying with i booked a flight with RYANAIR last week to the uk, and noticed that you the only form of id the accept is passport....
So check with the air line...
OR
Am not 100% sure about this, but you might be able to fly to Northern Ireland and get a train or bus down to dublin?? |

he needs some kind of genuine photo id: passport, driving license or identity card. Maybe his local irish embassy can advise but i know there are other options. |

Of course no problem, just tell him to have a PHOTO IDENTIFICATION thats important, even if is only a bus pass.
My Mother in Law travelled 4 times per year from Manchester
to Dublin with Bus Pass Photo Identification. |
