Ryanair/Aerlingus rip off fees? What do you think?

I go to Ireland every year to visit family.
I usually go from London Stansted or Gatwick, depending on whether I fly with Ryanair or Aerlingus.
I was planning on me and my 2 children visitng in April 2009. Ryanair is meant to be a bargain airline.Ok, I can get a flight for 0.00p but then get £75 in taxes
What has really p me off is that they now charge £30 per checked in bag!!!!! And if you have NO bag they are charging £10!!! PLUS its now a £5pp handling charge when paying by any sort of card..the justification is the cost they incur when handling the card.We all know this is boll@cks
Aerlingus is costing £739 for a family of 3 to go to Ireland !!!!
Feel free to rant..I havent even started!
Additional Details
Its not about whether its worth the money! ! How can these charges and fees be ok???!!!

I'm sorry to have to tell you not to use either of them, but I use to support Aer Lingus, and Ryan Air only if I had no choice, but now I always use BMI. They do not charge you for your bags, and their prices are good value. They fly from Heathrow.

ryanair are conmen

who cares ireland is worth it.

At the end of the day, you would be just as well off if you book a airline that is not a bargain airline, the trouble is you don't know about all the add-on's that the con airlines charge you until you come to book in. I think that you would be better off going with a airline that is not out to rob you.

nosdda
Its about time someone like trading standards looked into these hidden charges which no one knows about until they check in.

ash1
have you tried aer arann..they might be a rip off too but worth a look

Christmas time is the most expensive time to travel.
They can charge what they like because they know that if people
are looking for last minute seats at Christmas, they are usually prepared to pay (almost) anything.
If you had booked months ago it would have been half the price.

Both are lousy Airlines. Have flown with both of them.

Leave 1 day early and drive and you get to see much more of the countryside and you probably save couple hundred quid.

Prices are now supposed to be advertised to include fees and taxes. It is probably too soon to be looking for good prices for April. Try early in the New Year. Or investigate the ferry. If you were flying, you would not bring the car with you. Travel as foot passengers on the ferry, and it may be a lot cheaper. Or sound out other airlines coming here - or even flying into Belfast, with a bus or train down south afterwards.

My daughter knows someone who watches out for bargain airfares and frequently visits London for about €10 each way, including all fees. I haven't personal experience, but it sounds okay.

Keep your eyes alert for opportunities.

And you are absolutely right - those charges are outrageous.

Ryanair is quite often the most expensive option. It's one of the great advertising coups that some people think they are a bargain airline.

Use BMI - they are usually much cheaper than the competition.

The Shadow
If you're ticked off now, wait until you board the aircraft!

That's Ryanair's business model and it's well known. They even publicize it. Charge next to nothing for the fare and charge extra for everything else.

No offense, but what do you expect from an airline that charges absurdly low fares? Ryanair does not have some mystical formula that allows them to transport people for next to nothing. They do it by eliminating every bit of service and charging you extra for as many things as possible.

The lowest price is NOT always the best value! You truly get only what you pay for.

P.S. They do incur costs for accepting credit cards. They are not lying about that. The credit card company charges all businesses for processing their charges and billing them to your card . Most airlines just bundle that into the price. Ryanair does not. Again, that's why they can advertise ridiculously low prices.

Couldn't agree more!
I travel from Dublin to go home to see family several times a year, what you missed out was what they now charge for check in at the desk rather than online check in ( which can now only be done if you have a passport) and have to check in at the desk using your driving license =£20.

Yes they are conning people, put the correct price you pay before you go through the booking process and they add all the extra charges which really annoys me.

I have dogs so don't travel around the world, so no need for a passport. I also travel over by ferry about 5 times a year ( with my dogs) £85 single Belfast/Dublin to Birkenhead, includes fuel tax, a cabin and a meal with Norfolkline what a difference and I have my car and my dogs with me.

It cost me a fortune anyway but all these extra charges are really stopping me from using them again.

Orla C
Take the ferry.

I would only travel by BA they provide a good service and you get what you pay for and they run on time not like ryanair and aerlingus
