Should I do TY next year? What do you think about TY?

I don't know, I'm kinda torn? I'm quite young so I'll only be gone 17 doing my leaving cert so transition year might be good idea, but with all the cutbacks is there any point?

Did you do TY or did you just go straight into fifth year? What do think about TY?

I did TY. Thought it was fine for the first month and then got bored. Yes we did a few cool things but nothing major. I now just have a load of extra rubbish to write on my CV! Before doing TY I honestly was torn too. I went straight into 5th yr for like 2 wks, hated everyday of it because all my friends were doing TY. So I move back! Don't regret moving back but I would gladly have skipped it if some of my friends had. I personally think it was a waste of a year and college is so much better. But it's really a personal decision. It didn't make a difference how many opinions I got at the time, it was fine for other people to tell me what to do but they weren't in my position. I know people who skipped TY and were in 5th year when I was, that actually fit in etc but I just didn't want to. It's probably best you ask someone who has done it at your school as I know it can be really different. People currently doing it will probably tell you it's great so it's probably better coming from someone who has done it more than a year ago to get an unbiased opinion. Best of luck making your decision! Hope your schools TY is good if you decide to do it!

My Opinion? Avoid it like the god damn plague!

I didn't do it but my sister did (were twins so up until she done TY we were in the same year in different schools) and TY was so crap that she dropped out of school. it took all the convincing in the world to get her to go back for the start of 5th year! Similar thing happened to my friends except he wouldn't go back. They claim to do this and that and all the rest and you'll enjoy yourself and get experience in things other students wont and it helps with the transition from the junior cycle to the senior cycle and all the rest but they don't. They over-promise and under-deliver. At least thats how it was in my school and my sisters school.

People also say that TY was so much of a joke and they had so little work that they found it hard when they went into 5th year. the work load was a hell of a lot heavier then in Ty and they couldn't handle it.

I say go straight for 5th year. Ty doesn't have ANY benefit other then work experience and even that is nothing to write home about!

Chris Brown is the man!
Don't do it. Life begins in college, thats where you will be having the fun. TY is worthless! FACT! Ya you are a bit young but if you did bad in your leaving at least then you could repeat without having the pressure of fininshing school cos you fell you are too old, do you really want to be 19 doing the leaving! DO NOT DO TY!!!!

It really depends on your personality. If I had to go back in time and make the decision again, I wouldn't do it. If you can work without structure and can cope with doing pointless, boring work all year then do it but don't let your attendance slip at all. I got into the mindset of "Ah, sher it's only TY. It won't hurt if I miss a few days here and there" and ended up dropping out telling myself that I'd go back at the start of 5th year. I did, but in the months that I had been gone I'd kind of forgotten how to go to school and how to study and all that stuff so I ended up dropping out again. I gave it another try this year and the same thing happened.
I'm 18 now and all the people I did TY with are doing the LC this year and I'm kind of stuck in a rut and have no idea what to do with myself. If I had just gone into 5th year after the JC, I'd be in college by now. I know it sounds overdramatic, but it really wrecked my life.
17 isn't really that young to do your LC, I know people in 6th year who are 16 and will be 17 going to college.

Anywho, best of luck and sorry for being so negative. A lot of people have a great time in TY, but that really wasn't the case for me.

JOB 08
I have to make that decision too!

I think by summer '10 the economy will have recovered and there will be a lot more jobs so if u don't do TY you can get a job inthe summer your going into 6th year, then year after you will be finished school with some money saved up and you can go off to college with a bit of financial security.

I never did it. But it is good for a quiet person or somebody who wants a break. Also you can do many subjects and this can help you pick your Leaving Cert choices.

Hiya, i'm in TY now and i'm luving it!!! So far, we've all gotten closer as a year , we've gotten to know the teachers really well and its just a laugh! We do loads of stuff like! Today these guys came and we did like a whole CSI type thing and tomorrow were having a big court case with PAL. And we went and stayed up in galway and dublin so far.
One of my friends doesnt like it because she just finds it boring but shes the only one i know who doesnt like it.

The cut backs are something you'll have to look in to. In my school alot of the 3rd years are torn because alot of the things we are doing, they wont get to.
Find out from your teachers exactly what the situation is and they should have some idea what will be cut or not. If alot of things will be cut ye will be dooing projects and stuff, but i think its still a good year to do especially if you are young!

dollymix (now geeky for a month)
I think I will despite the cutbacks. You also have to think about the cutbacks that they will impose on 5th year students, they mightn't be able to chemistry and physics! I'm doing TY because there is a better chance of me doing the subjects I want afterwards.

And don't worry about making cards and bracelets all year! They don't do that! It's only for the mini business in the school Louise, the rest of the year is just like life skills, like work experience and driving lessons. They do different subjects not available in our year like Spanish and stuff.

I don't fancy leaving the school and going into college at 17. It's a bit of an immature age. Plus most of the girls are doing it and I don't want to be doing an unhappy year. If they weren't doing it then I wouldn't~whats the point? I wouldn't know anyone and I'd be unhappy!

So basically just do what you think would make you happiest. Good luck with your decision!
